Early on Friday night, the Dallas Cowboys made a move that will be talked about for years to come when discussing the 2014 NFL Draft. The Cowboys traded two valuable picks (#47 and #78) to the Washington Commanders to secure a pass rusher from Boise State. Were they impatient? Did they reach? Did they give up too much? All these things can be argued, but I believe the Cowboys stole Demarcus Lawrence in the second round on Friday night.

Today, I’m going to talk about the player and tell you what made Dallas trade up in the draft to get their pass rushing right defensive end. But first, it should be known that the Cowboys should feel very fortunate that he was even available in the second. In fact Demarcus Lawrence should probably be furious with Boise State University. The defensive scheme that was used when he played may have cost him millions of dollars and a definite spot in the first round. Had he been used in a similar way to Anthony Barr or Dee Ford, I’m convinced he would have been taken ahead of both of them. Lawrence was asked to be a “Four Technique.” And for people who don’t know what this means, It means that he lined up on the outside shoulder of the offensive guard. He was part of a 3-4 front that rarely let him rush the passer from the defensive end spot (or known as the 7 technique.) In Dallas, he will primarily be asked to rush from the end, which is a much better fit given his skill set.

As always, let’s first check out what kind of athlete Lawrence is and how he compares to a few pass-rushers in the NFL:

Its an improvement to what the Boys had or lack thereof. Either way it looks to be a good pick.

A rather glowing endorsement- good stuff. I do like what I've seen/heard thus far.

Great read. I'm starting to get pumped up to watch him play. Come training camp most will have forgotten the 3rd round pick we gave up to get him and just focus on all the new players that we will have competing for roster spots. It's all about finding players that can play no matter where you find them.

In his two seasons at Boise State, Lawrence led the league in tackles for losses and had the most sacks in that span but was not named the league's defensive player of the year."

That's a pretty cool stat, anyway.

I am not sold on this guy yet and giving up a pick for him I just don't know if we did the right thing.

If he turns out to be a solid pass rusher (double-digit sacks) then the picks 92nd and 3rd) will have been worth it. His first challenge: he needs to start day-one.

Great work OP! I am starting to think we have someone who could, @ the minimum, replace Ware's production from last season (6 sacks). It is encouraging that he also grades out as a good run defender so the team can have him start ASAP. Also, interesting read on the "4-tech" in a 3-4 and also where/when he was allowed to rush from the edge like he would in this scheme. Though the report states that his speed rush will be his primary move (makes sense), it is also encouraging that he is acclimated @ mixing it up inside as a result of the 4-tech he played in college. Great information and visual references to display your references!
