What exactly does a scouting report look like? And what specifically do the scouting reports of the greatest players in Cowboys’ history contain?

The Cowboys’ digital version of the Scouting Report for DeMarcus Ware is proudly displayed outside the scouting offices at The Star in Frisco. So what does the report say about the future Hall of Fame pass rusher who was the Cowboys’ 1st round pick in 2005?

Here’s what the Cowboys’ report says about Ware who played left defensive end at Troy University. The report was filed January 14, 2005, just 3 ½ months prior to the draft. It’s based on game film of Troy playing South Carolina, Arkansas and LSU (all big-time opponents from the powerhouse S.E.C.).

Categories/Comments from report:

ATHLETIC ABILITY:

Very good athlete
Has outstanding quickness and speed
Plays with good flexibility
Has long arms
Can play with leverage

COMPETITIVE/TOUGHNESS:

High motor guy
Can run from sideline to sideline
Plays with great effort
Shows toughness
Will chase in long pursuit

MENTAL LEARNING:

I think he plays with good football instincts and awareness
Plays on his feet
Can see and adjust when moving
Quick reaction to blocks
Great ball quickness

PLAYING STRENGTH:

Shows decent playing strength
Can play with leverage
Shows very good acceleration to close on ball carrier and QB
May lack the bulk to play consistent next level but has the ability to play early

PLAYING SPEED:

Outstanding playing speed
Can run and shows very good close

NUMERICAL GRADES (note: lower numbers are better):

Initial quickness = 2
Strength at POA (point of attack) = 4
Lateral Quickness = 2
Power Rush = 2
Edge Speed Rush = 1
Pursuit Effort = 1
3rd down value = 1
Burst to QB = 1
Tackling = 3
Use of Hands = 2
Reaction/Instincts = 2

MEDICAL INFO: (note: this category was left blank which is great because there is no long injury history)

STRENGTH/WORKOUT INFO:

Tall Rangy
Long arms
Lacks upper body bulk

STRENGTHS:

Athletic ability and competitiveness
Instincts and awareness
Lateral pursuit and effort
Pass rush
Use of hands

WEAKNESSES:

Lack bulk/size to take on and defeat run block
Hold the points versus double team

SUMMARY: DeMarcus is somewhat undersize but has outstanding tools to rush the passer – he has very good burst and speed off the edge – can flatten and close to the passer – plays with good instincts and awareness – shows intense desire to run down ball carrier – looks fluid in zone drop – can play through trash – has very good hand and foot coordination – can play off low blocks – very good slant and control balance – shows good ability to dip shoulder and roll hip when rushing passer – good speed to power – this player has a lot of upside – he will get bigger – can be a difference maker in big games
