Scouts quotes on prospects

I like Orlando Franklin a lot. No one talks about him here cause we pretty much cycle through the big names, but he's a pretty good prospect

D Sherrod- " did not look good at senior bowl. hes a hit or miss guy. Smarter than your average Mississippi State guy. He will be a starter."

Somewhere, Tom Brookshier is smiling.

Again, with apologies to Hos, I tend to side with the scouts I talked to a while back regarding Peterson. His future is playing safety in this league facing the ball. This guy simply agree's as do most I talk to.

With that said it does not change my opinion of him. I have always slotted Peterson as a safety and would still move up to 5 to take him.

That's giving up way too much for a safety. There are going to be several excellent free agents available. I like the idea of staying put and picking up one of the top 3 stud DE/DT's if available or one of the top 2 CB's. If all 5 of those are gone, then trade down and go offensive line.

So based on what these scouts say, I think we need to trade down to late 2nd or early 3rd and receive multiple picks for next year draft. Maybe 4 #1's. I think we should then take Orlando Franklin since that is the only one he was positive about. Darues would be long gone by the time we pick 9th.

John Moffitt - "could be a helluva center. He's strictly an in line player, but he's smart enough to play both OG and OC. He's a tough 4 year starter."

Peter Konz is going to be an interesting prospect.

Hopefully Moffitt is in VR plans. We need some more nasty. :)

That was some good stuff.

I'm going to research Orlando Franklin (from the U) more, too.

Dareus is going to be a beast, imo.

Also, Dallas really doesn't have a "technique" guy at RT now.

I'll take my chances on Tyron Smith's athletic ability all day at 9. He can always correct his technique. From what I've gathered, Smith struggled with his technique some due to needing to get stronger. He's only 20, and his body is still filling out. He will get stronger. He's already put on more weight with a better diet. This is a golden opportunity for the Cowboys, imo. It couldn't be set up any better.

I wish they would have mentioned J.J. Watt. That would have been interesting.

Keep in mind, I'm not sure if all the quotes are from the same scout

They're from personnel guys for six different teams. And some of the quotes were cherry-picked -- almost every guy has positive and negative quotes in the original article, but some of them posted wherever you got those from include only the good stuff or bad stuff for some guys.

By the way, here's the full write-up on Franklin --

Orlando Franklin, T, Miami: 6-6½, 315. Started at RT for two years before moving to LT in 2010. "I think he's better than Castonzo," one scout said. "He's bigger and more athletic. He may be a guard. He's got first-round talent. He's more athletic than (Bryan) Bulaga but not as consistent. I would trust Bulaga way more. But he's an immense human being, and guys like that play." Added another scout: "I think he's more of a top-50 or top-60 player. In our eyes, he's better than Carimi. More physical and athletic."

But you've gotta wonder if moving up to the top 5 is worth doing when you're talking about a conversion player. Moving to safety, a position where instincts and experience matter a great deal, is NOT an easy thing to do for many players. You don't trade premium picks for a great athlete that has question marks at his position and MAY be a decent safety if he makes the transition. Completely unnecessary risk given our needs and where we sit in the draft. Risks outweigh the rewards moving up for him IMO.

Interesting comment on UT players.

Seems to be a prevailing sentimet among NFL brass. Albert Breer wrote an blurb about it a few months back...

With some scouts, University of Texas players hit the college all-star games with a stigma to overcome, and deal with that all the way through the April draft. And with the Titans' decision this week to whack Vince Young, the posterboy for that Longhorn rep, the image of the Texas football player has once again come to light.

Pretty simple one: Spoiled. Coddled. Entitled.

"I think the stigma and the actual reality is the same," said one AFC personnel director. "They come in and they're soft. They're prima donnas. They're coddled at Texas and expect the same treatment in the NFL. They're all physically ready to play. They're well-prepared from a physical standpoint. From a technique standpoint, they're well-taught. They're well-coached in general.

"The problem is the culture. They're allowed to be superstars. The ones that can deal with that are the ones that have success. But the NFL's a culture shock for them, because their teammates don't treat them that way. They'll just say, 'What's your deal?' "

Ireland made a comment that some schools have programs that are run like country clubs while he was here and some speculated he was talking about UT.

It's difficult to find UT players that play to their draft status that's for sure.

Orakpo, Hampton...............

Am I missing anyone?

Earl Thomas? (after one year anyhow)

This is why I think Mac Brown should get the boot. Texas has had some pretty damn good teams in the past. I think if they weren't so damn coddled, they would have won more than one championship in recent years.

I know people like Mac Brown, but believe me. Texas wouldn't have any trouble landing a big time college head coach. It's not like they would have to worry about not getting a quality coach to replace Mac.

He looks like a good one but who knows how it will play out long-term

I'll add Blaylock to the list and Jamaal Charles, but the first round looks pathetic to me.

Cedric Benson has had two straight 1000 yard plus seasons in Cincy.
Jamaal Charles is putting up monster numbers in KC.
Jermichael Finley was hurt this year but he's clearly the #1 guy in GB.
Colt McCoy has come from 3rd string to starter in his rookie year in Cleveland.
Derrick Johnson has averaged 85 tackles for 6 seasons. 121 last year.
Roy Miller is a monster in Tampa. He anchors their interior D.
Aaron Ross is playing well at CB for the Giants.
Jordan Shipley had 52 catches in his rookie year in Cincy.
Ricky Williams has had good production for a long time in the NFL.
Jonathan Scott is the starting LT for Pittsburgh.
Shawn Rogers has been good for a long time in the NFL.
Casey Hampton has anchored the Pittsburgh D for 10 years.
Lamarr Houston is the starting R DE for Oakland in his rookie year.
Quentin Jammer has been a fixture at CB in San Diego 9 straight seasons.
Tim Crowder is the starting LDE for Tampa.
Michael Griffin 4 year starter in Tenn. and just posted 108 tackle season 2010
Earl Thomas is lights out in Seattle.
Nathan Vasher is the starting RCB in a very tough Detroit defensive unit.
Brian Orakpo is the real deal in Washington.
Justin Blalock is the starting LG in Atlanta.

Edit to add Michael Huff. Not sure how I forgot him but anyway, Mike Huff Safety.

Say what you will about Texas players but there are several in this league who are starting and posting very good numbers.

He's got Darren Woodson potential as a safety. Facing the football he would be incredible with his range, size, and closing speed. It would be INT City back there with him at FS and Newman at LCB. Even Jenkins if he readjusts his attitude.

You mean Justin Blalock WAS the starting LG who is now a free agent. ;)

Darren Woodson potential? I would need him to take an IQ test first. Woodson's strongest asset in my book was the fact that he is extremely intelligent.

The comment about Baldwin's hands almost made me stop reading. I dont know of anyone who thinks he has the best hands in this draft, if anything the biggest knock on him is his consistency.

Part of the reason scouts miss so much, especially the old timers (who actually have great histories) is they get caught years behind. WRs are getting bigger and bigger, and you need CBs who can handle them at the line of scrimmage. That 5 yard area is where PP lives. He will shut down guys in that area and that is why he is the best prospect on the board. You shut people down and have the long speed to catch up if they do get by you and you can star in this league.

PP is the one guy in this draft class you could man up on Andre Johnson or Fitzgerald with only help over the top. That is invaluable to a DC.

No, you don't want a new coach at UT.

Mack Brown has built a friggin dynasty. UT was a middle of the road when Mack showed up. His system does coddle players but it also works at the collegiate level.

UT guys are over drafted just like USC guys. You get so many good players together and consistently bring in the top athletes out of high school and the most athletic will be over drafted. It happens to everyone. You win and players get more looks and combine maxed out physiques form world class training programs and good overall technique and these types of players have less room to grow.

But none of that is a knock on Mack's program. His job is to dominate the collegiate landscape and he has done so. One down year in a decade is hardly a reason to fire him.

All that said, I am a Texas Techsan so by all means fire Mack. I'd love to see UT slip back to a mere top 15-20 recruiting school. They'd seldom beat Tech if that happened.
