I just got back from Vacation in the Cayman Islands. (my second trip there, I was married in 2006 there also)

Anyway, while there we did many activities. Turtle Farm, Stingray Sandbar, snorkling in several great places. I've always been a huge snorkling fan and always try to visit the best snorkling places.

Well, this time I decided to take it a step further and went Scuba Diving for the first time. I didn't actually go through proper procedure to do it. I took what was called a Resort Dive. Basically, you take about two hours of basic diving classes then you dive to a maximum depth of 40 feet with a PADI certified diving instructor at your side.

First, I want to say that I found out afterwards that most scuba accidents occur in this scenario rather than after being fully certified. In hindsight I do not recommend doing a "Resort Dive". Especially if you aren't very cool in what could be a life threatening situation. (ie the possibility of panic if water enters your mask) If they limited the depth to say 20 feet, then I would be more OK with it.

That said, the experience kicked ***! Getting used to the breathing apparatus was the only difficult thing and that really wasn't an issue either. It makes you a little nervous when you first submerge, (as breathing feels very odd) but after a minute or so, you become used to it and completely forget about it. The only thing that kept me aware of it is the fact that the air is extremely dry which can make you feel thirsty.

The only other thing that originally made me very nervous was the possibility of my mask flooding, though they teach you how to purge your mask underwater. I got very little water in my mask during my dive, but had absolutely no issue in purge what water did get in.

If you are interesting is doing what could be considered exotic things or seeing exotic places or things, I highly recommend Scuba Diving. It is in my opinion completely worth the time, effort, and money required to make it happen.

No, that isn't me!

I never knew they had turtle farms. Is that sea turtles they raise and release in the wild?

I think scuba diving would be cool. I bet you could find all kinds of stuff at the bottom.

(Oh, and thanks for posting that pic. I had no idea what a scuba diver looked like ;) )

Yep, several places have turtle farms. I think there is one in the Galápagos Islands too.

The pic wasn't completely about the scuba diver as much as about the "OK" sign he is showing. :) It isn't just an answer, it's a question! :p:

I have always wanted to do this. My brother-in-law is a licensed instructor now and has gone diving all over the world. I have always wanted to dive on a shipwreck. He has dived on several of them. I think going inside would be really eerie. I'd like to dive on the Edmund Fitzgerald, but I think there are serious restrictions about it if I remember right.

I was trained and certified is SCBA when I was a fireman. That stands for Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. SCUBA adds a U which is Underwater.

As a fireman, they'd put you in a smoke filled room and have you find your way out without panicking. I saw a lot of people fail because they get claustrophobic. To me it was somehow kind of comforting. I felt safer.

So I have always been curious about Scuba if I would feel the same.

Thanks for sharing about your experience. I hope some serious divers will chime in.

I used to dive. Loved it. It's probably the coolest experience there is.

Then I watched "Open Water" and call me a ***** but I can't dive in oceans anymore. It's an irrational fear, but it's one that I can't shake. I still have all my gear, though, so maybe I'll take it up again one day.

Did it once, and it was incredible. Definitely something everyone should try. Probably the closest you'll ever come to discovering a whole new world when you're undewater. And it really is a whole new world.

I used to dive a lot (mainly looking for pelagics) and it is the most amazing experience other than what I spend my money and time on now... My kids.
It is something you should do at least once in your life IMO, and if you get the chance to submerge with large animals (sharks, mantas, whales, turtles, etc.) you will experience something unique.

I did see a turtle in the open water. Size wise, he wasn't huge like the giant ones I saw at the turtle farm, (easily 800-1,000lbs and 5+ feet long) but he was about 4 feet long and probably 3 feet wide. He was on the bottom when I came upon him. He started swimming real slow up toward the surface. When he passed by me he had his head cocked over staring at me. He passed me at about 2 feet away. I reach out and touched his shell as he passed. He didn't care, he just kept slowly swimming to the surface. It was very cool.

Every diver worth his salt will tell you not to mess with the wildlife, especially the coral, but let's be honest touching these beautiful creatures in their own habitat and maybe hitching a ride...
If you really want to get hooked try diving with some giant manta-rays.
Just talking about it I feel the urge to submerge!

I've done countless hours of snorkling and "free diving", but I've never taken the classes to scuba dive. Seems that the older I get I keep losing seconds off of my ability to hold my breath for extended periods. I may just have to give up and take the classes in the next year or two.

Seeing as I cant swim. I tend not to Scuba. :)

Seeing how you can't swim, sounds like SCUBA would keep you alive in the water! hehe

I choose not to touch coral, but I know that some coral (well not technically coral) you damn sure don't want to touch. (fire coral) :laugh2:

My wife and I got PADI Certified right before our honeymoon to Cozumel.

Just absolutely unbelievable.

There really is no describing it...you have to experience it.

Santa Rosa Wall...incredible.
