This has to be one of the most fluid drafts for the Cowboys in some time. I believe that has a little do with the new wag scale format, the draft position as in placed almost in the middle of the draft, the lack of blue chip talent at the top and the activity of Dallas in free agency. I also believe the draft is being run how it should be and is not nearly as an open book as we have seen in the past. Either way, by my own admittance, I struggled this year. I believe there are several ways this draft can go in the 1st three rounds, I expect Dallas to be active and all of it played a part. With that said, I give to you my final mock in hopes that you forgive me for being wrong more then I'm right, something my wife points out to me daily.......
ROUND 1, PICK #14:
Mark Barron | S | Alabama
I don't know how they will get it done, maybe they move up, perhaps he settles where he should right at 14 but I think this is the guy Dallas wants the most that has a realistic shot of dropping to #10. Make no bones about it, if Cox or Claiborne drop to 6 Dallas will be active. I don't know if the price will be right but they will shop. Bottom line is, Barron fills the one most obvious glaring need on this team. The missing link if you will.
Alternatives:
Fletcher Cox | DE | Mississippi St-There remains the possibility Cox falls to an area Dallas can afford and if it happens Dallas will buy.
Michael Brockers | DE | LSU-It was not until the last minute I witched Brockers with Barron. If Dallas stays put and Barron is gone Brockers will be the pick.
David DeCastro | OG | Stanford-Should Dallas find themselves at 14 with Cox/Barron gone and Brockers/DeCastro staring at them they will field offers and be tempted to move. Ideally the would love to drop into the 20's or late teens and grab DeCastro.
ROUND 2, PICK #45:
Derek Wolfe | DE | Cincinnati
Is there any way to get this pick right if you blow the 1st round....I have yet to figure out how. Wolfe has been a late riser in Dallas, a name that suddenly has gotten really hot. Some might say he is a reach at 45 but he wont be there in the 3rd and I get the feeling we will either end up with an additional 2nd round pick or trade back in Round 2. Wolfe is the answer for not getting Brockers or Cox (see we got Brockers I'm screwed). Jason says RD 1 and RD 2 you need to draft starters. Well, arguably outside of safety, DE is the most wide open position. Dallas needs more production from the defensive line. Wolfe is scratching his potential.
Alternatives:
Dwayne Allen | TE | Clemson-The search for a TE will start early as in right after the announce their pick in Round 1. I think value will keep Dallas from doing it and keep fans from taking blood pressure medicine.
Peter Konz | OC | Wisconsin-Make no bones about it, should he fall to 45 he will be the pick. I don't think that will be the case but I do believe there is a chance Dallas could go back up to get him.
Jeff Allen | OT | Illinois-If Dallas whiffs on DeCastro, Whiffs on Konz and Wiffs on Zietler they would happily settle for Jeff Allen who has been projected to OG but can play OT.
ROUND 3, PICK #81:
Orson Charles | TE | Georgia
Jason says Round 3 they hope to find a possible starter. Well this is a passing league, Jason loves his TE's and Bennett is gone. Even if you consider Phillips #2, our #3 is as close as a starter as it gets. One of Charles strongest attributes is his inline blocking, something Dallas requires in a 3rd TE.
Alternatives:
Billy Winn | DE | Boise St-I'm going to list every DE on the board until Dallas gets one, this is basically CMOA if they pass on Wolfe. At some point in the first 2 days Dallas will find themselves a DE.
Jammell Flemming | CB | Oklahoma-He can play CB or Safety, the Alan Ball roll if you will, he just can do it better. Something the Dallas defense needs and no longer has.
Ryan Broyles | WR | Oklahoma-He has been a staple in my last several mocks. I have cooled on the idea, if he is there in Round 4 which I doubt I think Dallas will run to the podium.
ROUND 4, PICK #113:
TY Hilton | WR | Florida Internation
Round 4-7 are role players Jason says. Well, we need a shifty slot WR, a #3 after losing Robinson and more then anything, a presence in the return game. Enter Ty Hilton and my ruing of passing on Broyles.
Alternatives:
Philip Blake | OC | Baylor-Read on........
Cyrus Gray | RB | Texas A&M-At some point I believe a RB will be taken, Gray's talents may force Dallas to do it earlier then they wish.
Keenan Robinson | OLB | Texas-We know Spencer's status and lets face it, a 3-4 rarely gets this far in the draft with having picked a LB yet.
ROUND 4, PICK #135:
Philip Blake | OC | Baylor
Those calling for OL help can relax, although it came probably much later then you wanted. Forget his age, he has 10 years left and is probably the most plug and play offensive lineman your going to find at this stage in the draft.
Alternatives:
Ron Brooks | CB | LSU-I don't like leaving this kid off my mock, my gut tells me is going to be a Cowboy but that's the game.
Josh LeRibeus | OG | SMU-This is the area Dallas will look to focus on the OL if they miss out early. They really like this kid and he is moving up quick.
Juron Criner | WR | Arizona-If the Cowboys miss out on Broyles and Hilton Criner could be the pick. Starting to think he wont last this long but more then anything I just want to see if Hos is paying attention.
ROUND 5, PICK #152:
Tank Carder | OLB/ILB | TCU
Hey look, it's a LB and a Hybrid LB at that. Carder can play inside or outside and fits two criteria, he emphasizes "our kind of guy" and he is the ultimate role player.
Alternatives:
James Hannah | TE | Oklahoma-If Dallas fails to address the desire for a TE early this is when you can expect one to come off the board.
Kheeston Randall | DE | Texas-Even if they address the DE/DT position early I expect them to sinff around again later in the draft
Emmanuel Acho | LB | Texas-He was almost the pick here but Carder got the nod by a hair.
ROUND 6, PICK #186:
Emmanuel Acho | LB | Texas
Dallas stays put and still gets a OLB. I'm not sure they wont look this direction earlier, they need to rush the passer and create some competition at OLB. They really Acho and this pick may happen a round earlier.
Alternatives:
Rhett Ellison | TE | USC-I believe this is the guy Dallas wants if they wait this late to get a TE
Marquis Maze | WR | Arkansas-The TY Hilton/Ryan Broyles fall back option
Terrance Ganaway | RB | Baylor-I'm just going to hit submit before I change this pick again. Dallas really likes this kid and I think this is where we look for a RB.
ROUND 7, PICK #222:
Cordarro Law | DE/OLB | Southern Miss
A big bodied thumper of a OLB who can rush the passer. This guy really has peaked the interest of 3-4 teams.
Alternatives:
Justin Bethel | CB | Presbyterian-Dallas may look for the small school special teams ace. I expect the 7th rd to be dedicated to a guy who can help out the coverage units.
Korey Toomer | OLB | Idaho-A late riser on the Cowboys board
Charles Brown | CB | North Carolina-Dallas sent several coaches to the NC pro day, I hear they really liked Brown.
