SEAN LEE & “THE RABBIT HOLE” HE REFUSES TO GO DOWN
by Kristi Scales
Sean Lee earned All-Pro honors in 2016 thanks to a team-leading 174 tackles for the NFC East Champions. He played 92% of defensive snaps last season; it would have been 99% if coaches had not decided to rest him in the final regular season game. When healthy, there’s no better playmaker on the Cowboys defense.
...Still, he knows there will always be critics who question ‘Can Sean Lee can stay healthy?’ He’s aware of his reputation as being ‘injury prone’. “That’s a rabbit hole I did not want to go down,” admits Lee. “I knew when I was healthy I could help this team win and play the linebacker position the right way. My goal was to stay healthy and find a way to get better. That’s where I kept my focus. It was more about not buying into that narrative. It was saying, ‘Hey, listen, I know that if I keep working and stay positive, I can get there’. But like anything, there are days you get frustrated...
“There will always be doubts in some people’s minds, and that’s okay. I just care about playing great football and helping our team win. All that other stuff, you can’t control. That’s the best thing I’ve done: I’m trying to control what I can control. I’m not trying to read anything into what happened in the past or what could happen in the future. When you start thinking about that, that’s just going to take your focus away from your goals. I’m focusing on the next thing to get better, nothing else.”...
