Saturday’s big news was the restructuring of linebacker Sean Lee’s contract. Lee, set to make $7 million in base salary in 2019, has agreed to have his pay lowered to $3.5 million instead, with another $3.5 million possible via incentives.

Once the undisputed centerpiece of the Dallas defense, Lee has missed significant time over his career due to injury. He has never played a full 16-game season since being drafted in 2010, and hasn’t played five consecutive games since 2016. While hurt again this past season, Lee saw his role drastically reduced due to the emerging play of fellow linebackers Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch.

After the team’s playoff loss to the Rams, Lee told reporters he would take some time before deciding whether to return for another season. But his sizable contract was going to be an issue. By voluntarily taking a pay cut and acquiescing to “a diminished role” (according to SportsDay), Lee stays with the only NFL club he’s ever played for (one whose coaching staff it’s been speculated he may join one day), and he provides solid positional depth and key veteran leadership at a manageable price tag.
