This may have gone unnoticed, or not commented upon, but an aspect of Lee's fundamental soundness was his fumble recovery on the last offensive play for the Commanders.

If anyone has every played or coached football, when you're recovering a live ball, or fumble, you're supposed to dive low, corral the ball and immediately cover it.

Lee sees the ball and comes in low, missing another Cowboy who was coming in high and secures the ball cleanly.

That told me, at least, that he pays attention to fundamentals. Many players don't or couldn't corral a fumble like that. That was just a fundamentally sound play.

I think a better example of fundamentals is watching him drop back on a pass. i love how back pedaled and moved his hips on the interception it was like picture perfect how your taught perfect. But i would also say that that throw by Grossman was absolutely terrible

What Lee has that this team has lacked at a number of positions for awhile is:

SMARTS/BRAINS!
INSTINCT!
STUDENT OF GAME!

We have had many athletic and genetically talented players - guys like Marty B, Sensi, etc etc.

Lee has some of that (although I don't think he's a genetic freak by any means) - he has some speed, but isn't huge.

He is fundamentally sound as you say - tackles low and smartly - takes great angles. But he makes quick and instinctual decisions.

He watches QB's eyes. He studies tape.

That is the difference, and the hidden stuff he brings to table I think.

Probowl level play through 3 games EASY. Deserves a ton of credit.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay healthy Lee.

That's true too. But you can tell how fundamentally sound a person is not just by how he plays his position but how he performs in those areas that aren't that common.

Lee is supposed to drop back in pass coverage as a linebacker. I expect him to be very good at that if he's fundamentally sound. But having the perfect form on a fumble recovery, something many teams don't practice that much. That speaks volumes to me.

Yea your right i agree. It just seems out of this world to have such great play at MLB i love it.

When we drafted him it reminded me of the Kevin Burnett pick, because both guys were captains of their teams in college, and that's something I like to see in linebackers. Thankfully, we don't have a coaching staff that doesn't let young guys get on the field now so we didn't have the same result as we did with Burnett.

I loved Lee as soon as I saw him on the field last year. You can't teach instincts like his, and when I heard he was studying Browns footage as soon as the lockout was lifted I figured we were in for a good year, assuming he was actually given the chance to start.

...he's a younger version of Brooking: but I have to ask this: Did Keith EVER cover and get deep drops for INT's like that? Even if he didn't it's probably because the league wasn't so pass happy back then. But if you guys think about it, Brooking was a serious butt kicker for 10 years in this league: I think we have the second coming fellas. And that's good enough for me.:D

Ben and Skin had a great nickname for him.

The Hammer Of Rob.

I love it.

Brooking could never cover like Lee does now. He was obviously better in his younger years, but I don't recall him ever displaying the coverage ability that Lee has.
