every drink makes you pee, if you dehydrate you pee less but I agree its an odd drink to have during a game.. typically water, Gatorade, and special energy drinks but once an athlete has a ritual ie a habit and it works, they are superstitious they will continue to do it..Why?

Coffee does not cause dehydration. It is a mild diuretic that will cause you to pee, but not excessively.
