If the Cowboys don’t make the playoffs, this is Sean Lee’s last game as a Cowboy under the current contract. In his latest interview, he reveals that he will decide by March if he will play another season in the NFL. He also says that he was contemplating retirement more so last season than the current one. I’d gather he is going to play at least one more season somewhere. Whether or not he plays for the Cowboys is another story.

With Lee as the starter, the Cowboys have traditionally been a better team than without. In 2017, the Cowboys were 1-5 without Lee, with an 11-point differential in those games. Which, of course led to the drafting of Vander Esch, whom Lee thinks will be an all-time great linebacker.
Everyone knows Lee has been injury prone throughout his career. But just in case, here’s a reminder:
He has had a grade 3 tear in the ACL’s of both knees, three concussions, six hamstring pulls, a dislocated wrist, a turf toe, a knee PCL sprain and a totally avoidable cervical neck sprain.

Lee also famously fell victim to brutal and illegal blindside blocks, most notably the one in Seattle. The cheap shots he took in Chicago in 2013 led to another injury, which should have been avoided had the team doctors done their jobs. That’s my take, anyhow.
And many of us will never forget, when in the preseason following the 2014 draft, first round rookie anomaly Zack Martin blew out Lee’s knee while trying to show his stuff in OTA’s. Lee would miss the entire season. You can see Scandrick’s passionate reaction to the injury as he hurls his helmet into the ground. Because Scandrick’s clock was ticking too, and he knew this could be a Super Bowl team with Lee. All our hopes would eventually be crushed in a clear catch by Dez Bryant that the stripes decided not to count in Green Bay.
So, yes folks this will be the first year in his 10-year NFL career in which he started in every regular season game. I know he is a source of divide within these forums. But no one worth debating with can deny the man’s heart and passion for the game, as well as his incredible football IQ.
I may be in the minority, but I hope he signs another team friendly contract here for a couple more years. He’s one of the last remaining selfless football players, and a veteran leader this team needs when transitioning to the new coaching staff.
