Sean Payton: a few years back in NY, he was relieved of play calling duties.

I think it was in the 2002 season. Maybe wrong in the year. But I distinctly remember that Fassell, NYG coach at the time, decided he needed to call the plays himself during the season. I don't remember details like why, etc.

Will Parcells do the same? Has Parcells not yet fathomed something Fassell figured out?

Payton is WAY to conservative....he coaches without any ba11s, BP needs to take the playcalling back ASAP or else we are in for a long season.

I think the players are playing their arses off, but are being handcuffed by scared and nervous playcalling.

Payton also got the Giants to the SB with his play calling his game plan is directed by Parcell's and do not think it is otherwise

That Giants team was marching up and down the field all season even with Payton calling the plays. Collins threw for 4000 yards and Tiki ran for 1400.

The problem was they kept shooting themselves in the foot. Even with 4000 yards passing Collins only had 19 TDs vs. 14 INTs. Their Red Zone offense was terrible, and they had major injuries for most of the season on their O-Line.

The offense got better when Fassel took over, but a couple of the hurt lineman came back the week he took over as well.

Actually the Giants did make it to the Superbowl that year but Sean Payton WAS NOT calling the plays. Half way through the season Jim Fossel took over the play calling duties. Once Jim Fossel took over the play calling duties the Giants offense took off.

Parcells need to worry about taking over the D playcalling long before taking over for Payton.

I don't believe that BP is engaged on every play, he is listening and can override, but he is not....There is not enough time for BP to really interfere with what is going on with each and every play, there's not.

Last year when BP was calling plays we opened it wide open early with Vinny, look at BP's history...he is not very conservative at all, contrary to what many think.

Payton got canned calling plays in NY...nuff said.

It was also stated the the reason Fassell took over was there were too many penalties and the offense was overly complicated.

Actually it was Fassel who was doing the play-calling for the first half of the season. He turned it over to Sean Payton who then helped the Giants to the SB. In 2002, it was the opposite and Fassel took over. He was 3-0 before losing back to back against Houston (first year) and in OT against Tennessee. Don't forget they also gave up a big lead in the playoffs versus the 49ers that year.

(His 3-0 record was against losing record teams, too... so it wasn't like he was beating on playoff teams.)

Ding Ding Ding....it was, as far as I remember, NOT a problem of being TOO conservative.

It was reported at the time that it was too complicated, causing people to have penalties due to not knowing the offense well enough.

I agree...
I would also love to be in the game planning meetings to know for sure...
Who is actually making the calls on both offense & Defense.

Is Jerry calling the plays? That would explain everything :)

Yes, too many formations - lots of penalties. Fassell instituted a watered down version with less movement and the team rallied.

Again...another example of Payton NOT adjusting to game plans. He sets a game plan and does not deviate from it. The only example of potentially deviating was the SF game, and look what Bledsoe did in the 4th qtr....

Here's an idea....let's pretend it's the 4th qtr and down by 13 when the game starts. Then and only then will we open things up and build a lead.

Sounds like a plan to me. I think we need to rally behind a new OC!

It seems like the play calling with Payton is either ultra conservative, run down the middle, or a gadget play, flea flicker. We need more 5-7 step drops and to let bledsoe scan the field and take some shots deep. That will open up the run. Teams already think we have no deep speed, and we play into it with our play calling.

Payton needs to learn to call plays for Witten. Witten is so underutilized right now and Bledsoe needs to learn to go to him instead of focusing on Glenn or the other wr.
