Sean Payton redux

All of the complaining and whining and moaning about Jason Garrett is very familiar to me. We had another OC who was vilified on a weekly basis and people couldn't run out of town fast enough. He was considered incompetant, stupid, no feel for the game, a moron, etc., etc., etc. According to fans on this site and others, his intelligence to call plays was barely above the level of a bacteria.

It was Sean Payton. His playcalling was scrutinized even more in Dallas than Garrett is today. He couldn't do anything right. He couldn't call a proper play if you put a gun to his children's head, according to most.

There was all kinds of "good riddance", "it's about time" and "thank God" sentiment when he left for New Orleans. There were internet celebrations galore. And laughter at the Saints for being stupid enough to hire him. He was considered the only one desperate enough to take on an impossible situation post Katrina.

We have now all witnessed the results of allowing Payton to go to the Saints.

I think we can all agree with hindsight that letting Payton go to New Orleans was a mistake. We all wish he was coaching Romo and the offense right now. But it is now all water under the bridge. He's gone and he isn't coming back.

What I see now on the internet regarding Jason Garrett is the same things I saw when Sean Payton was here. All the namecalling, the second guessing, etc. Everybody here knows how to call a game better than that idiot red head. Everybody wants him gone yesterday.

I'm not saying Garrett will have the same success as Sean Payton. In fact, chances are slim that he will. Lightening almost never strikes twice. But it's a given that Jerry felt he made a mistake in letting Payton go and he won't let Garrett go without giving him a chance to succeed or fail at the head coaching position in Dallas. Before Garrett is allowed to leave Dallas, Jerry will want to make sure he's not another Sean Payton. That's why he will be the next coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Good post. 100% agreed. Garrett cannot put the ball in the end zone, the player have to. We are getting the yards needed to move the ball and score points but we struggle in the red zone.

I dont believe Garrett can call all the right plays from the 20 yd line to the other 20 yd line and then suddenly forget how to get yardage in the red zone. The player also have to execute.

Actually Garrett was brought in even before Wade was. So he's technically not part of Wade's staff.

I'm about 110% sure this doesnt matter one iota.

There have been good asst coaches on staffs on a poor head coach, just like there have been poor assistants under a very good coach. Some "great" assistants go out and royally flop as head coaches.

Did Sean pass only or only call for runs on any particular drive? I see Sean mixing it up over there in Nawlins whereas Garrett can't switch gears...

Cowboys starting QBs with Payton here: Quincy Carter, Vinny Testaverde, Drew Henson and Drew Bledsoe

Cowboys starting QBs with Garrett here: Tony Romo

End of discussion.

I don't remember mass villification of Sean Payton at all. Sure, some people complained about playcalling, but that happens after every loss.

But most people knew Parcells was running the show at the time and it wasn't clear how much say Payton even had.

that's the thing! Payton coached under proven winners. Garrett was a qb coach in Miami and than was promoted to OC and assistant HC for Dallas. Garrett didn't deserve that leap especially that soon. this is the same guys who calls TE screens to Witten! Witten is the last TE in the league that should be getting a screen with his lack of speed and agility.

What is killing the Cowboys and Jason Garrett right now isn't the play calling, it's not featuring Felix Jones and not using Tashard Choice.

I said Felix would be the key to a Cowboys playoff run in December.

He isn't getting the football enough.

Playcalling is brutal. I don't care who you are, only the Browns or Raiders OC would call 3 straight dives to the right on the goal line. Not even ONE ATTEMPT at play action.

There'd been just as massive, if not moreso of a mutiny had the Cowboys attempted even ONE pass down inside the 1 after running it down their throats the way they did, and you know it.

Everyone needs to quit blaming play calling for not scoring a TD there. If you cant gain two damn feet in three tries, you suck. I dont care what type run plays are called there...its inexcusable with the RB's and size of our OL.

I agree. I think that goalline flop should be shared equally by Barber and the offensive line. Barber ran gutless and attempted to dive on two straight plays where he clearly should't have and the offensive line really didnt help by whiffing on their assignments.

Honestly I would have preferred a quarterback sneak on that 3rd down play. The quarterback sneak should be bread and butter on the one yard line.

The only play I would really put and blame on Garrett for, was that FB dive to Barber. There is no chance a pulling guard is going to get over in time to block a blitzing linebacker before a fullback can get the ball that close to the endzone. That was a poor call and even poorer execution.

Its actually been really good for Barber on short yardage plays when we've done it, I think it was noted somewhere its the first time it didnt work.

I was one of those who didn't care much for Payton. Just something about a guy who gets relieved of play calling duties and watches the same players he couldn't do a thing with improve and make the playoffs.

Payton wasn't doing anything impressive in Dallas and I'm of the mindset that if you aren't cutting it, you should go. I could care less if a guy goes on to do something at another stop, if you aren't going to do that in Dallas it doesn't matter.

Just like Folk. I'd send him or sit him. If someone wants to pick him up and he goes back to being money, fine. He's not doing it in Dallas.

Hats off to Payton for making it happen now though. He has far greater player to work with now so maybe he didn't get a fair shake in Dallas.

Either way, Dallas didn't let anyone get away. He took a HC job somewhere else. Kind of happens sometimes.

Garrett, he's a whole different animal. He has tons of talent to work with and he still has giant holes in his game.

I agree 100% with what you said after seeing Payton leave to have success and also Sparano have relatively good success Jerry isnt going to make that same mistake. People can belly ache all they want about JG but I honestly think he's gonna be a successful coach for us. The man is all business from everything I've seen of him even when they mic'd Romo during the Tampa Bay game and Romo was joking with him JG still seemed serious and all business. I believe he'll bring that mentality to the team when he's the one in command of it.

You need to go back and read all those threads than cause I honestly believe Paytons playcalling was rediculed worst than what garrett is getting. Fans did vilify Payton and wanted nothing to do with him before he left for NO
