As the game went on, the more irritated and the more frustrated i got and for a few minutes after the game it turned into being infuriated. Infuriated because Dallas should've been able to do what they did to to the Commanders to any team in the NFL. Troy Aikman seemed to be just a frustrated saying this on tv.
The talent on this team is no joke, no punch line. It's legit talent across the board. And it boggles the mind that it had players who didnt play a complete season and a coaching staff that failed its players just as much as they failed them. Since 2016 Dallas has played in so many close games, the difference between 2016-2018 to this yr they won them games in them close situations. They were making that one play that got them the win. This yr that one play went to the other side.
Im never a half empty glass type of fan, so if thats what youre looking for, just go away.
Im more excited for 2020 then i was for 2019 because i know theres 99% chance theres a new guy in town heading this team. I dont need a great coach, i just need one that wont cost the team them close games. A coaching staff thats together with its players. A coaching staff thats together with the scouting department. Jerrys going to give this coach what he needs, he's just got to deliver. He got to get these players to believe in him. In 2016 it looked like these players would die for JG, but time went and things stayed the same. And JG lost a part of the trust.
So right now im still down, but im anxious to see what direction Jerry goes with the HC. Does he go with the College guy who just wins everywhere he goes with Meyers, or the Offensive QB guru in Riley? Does he pull a rabbit out of his hat and sells out for a Belichick, Payton? Or does he get a guy like JG and is a guy who just treads water and doesnt ruffle feathers with Jones and the players?
My dream would be Belichick, the guy is just a genius in how he operates. Jerry seemed to give Parcells the reigns but Parcells just didnt deliver. He's said this even himself. So i dont think that Jerrys unwilling to take a step back. Its just is there a coach that he can trust to take that step back? He was willing with Parcells, could he talk Belichick into Dallas? Id love Meyer aswell because the guy lives football. When you see him analyze plays you see just how great he is.
Id like to see some change with this roster, but its more about the depth.
I really think this team needs better depth at DL. For 2020 you have Lawrence under contract and who else that you would be comfortable with? Gregory is there but can you count on him? Collins is a UFA but is he worth over 4-5mil a yr? Woods will be back as he's a RFA. Then you got Trysten Hill, Daniel Wise, Joe Jackson, Dorance Armstrong. None of them make me think ok theyre gonna be alright.
LBers? Jaylon is dead lock and he's a physical guy. He started the yr hot and cooled off when he had to switch to the MIKE. Vander Esch is a question mark because of the neck. I talked about this when he was drafted. And questioned why he still wore the neck protector if he was fine from his injury. He answered inn a interview that he just felt comfortable with it. That might be the case but as we see it just takes one wrong hit and this is what happens. So this team needs some insurance. And i think they found it and his name is Malcolm Smith. This guy made so many plays in 2 games that im amazed he wasnt playing for another team. He flies to the ball, he wins matchups and he gets off blocks to make tackles.
CB core i think you gotta go with Awuzie and Lewis starting and bring in some guys or draft, or both. Jones is going to get alot on rep. He's not worth it though. I like Brown in the slot, but he might be outpriced aswell. Good thing this is a deep class at CB.
S, is another trouble spot. There are guys in FA the draft and in trade that the team can get. I the think the easiest would be in the draft. Think is Delpit is there when the team picks he will be the guy. You cant deny how much better the secondary was when Heath came back from the injury list though. You have to wonder how good Heath could be in a defense that doesnt play so soft. Because he is so aggressive and physical in open space.
On the OL, i think this team needs to get on Tyrons deal. The guaranteed money is low enough(5.94mil) on his contract that they can restructure and cut his caphit down. Think they could save around atleast 6mil on a restructured caphit for him in 2020. Of if they think hes not what they want anymore they could save almost 10mil by releasing him. Then theres the cost of replacing him so i think its just better to lower to cost by restructuring him. He's still only 28 thats crazy how long hes been in the nfl and only 28. Then getting this LG spot figured out, wether its Williams or McGovern. Dallas has a team option on Fleming and was up and down today. But his cap hit is just over 3mil. So its not like hes expensive. The team seems to like Hyatt too. As they moved him to the 53 so he wouldnt be plucked from the PS.
WR is another spot that needs to be addressed. First they gotta get this Cooper thing figured out. I think ultimately they will sign him. Because the team wants him and he doesnt want to be anywhere else. People make so much out of him not being signed yet. It really doesnt matter because he's not the type of guy who needs a headline. I can see him taking a little less with incentives. Theres are just certain players in the NFL who dont make waves, dont cause rukus. And he's one of them. Man Gallup is coming into his own. You can argue that his chemistry with Dak is even better than With Cooper now. Then after that Dallas has nothing with Cobb a FA. If Meyer becomes HC that could change with Devin Smith. The guy looked like he was heading upward especially with that Commanders game but after that wasnt heard from again. Either way Smith is under contract for 2020. And hes a Meyer guy. Dallas could get in the WR market in the draft, they will be picking in prime position for a guy like Jefferson and Ruggs.
I see things like this and it makes me anxious for the offseason to start. Like i said i will never be a glass half empty guy. This is a team that ive cheered for when they were 1-15 to superbowl champs being the best team of the 90s decade. To rebuilds, to underacheivers. But im a fan through and through. Its not my place and im not qualified to question what they do and how they do it. I dont agree with everything Jerry does, but me losing sleep over it isnt going to change it. I know not everybody is capable of thinking this way, and to each their own. And as i have said, if i ever get to be like some of you and your pessimism of this team, id just choose not to watch football anymore.
So heres to hoping for a competent coach with some new blood in players and a new yr we can hope the drought ends. At the end of the day we're Cowboy fans. The greatest franchise in all of sports.
