The Cowboys have solid starters at almost every position, but there are two glaring holes on this team: Wide Receiver and Safety. While there is depth at both positions, youth and inexperience are also huge factors.

Wide Receiver
Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton lead a group that has almost no experience behind them.
Miles Austin has had flashes of brilliance in his three years in the league but still has only 18 career receptions and three touchdowns. Sam Hurd has 21 career receptions and Isiah Stanback spent most of last season injured and is still considered a project at this point.
The Cowboys used only one draft pick at this position, getting Oklahoma's Manuel Johnson in the seventh round. However, Johnson's career hasn't started well, as it was reported that he wasn't in shape during the Cowboys rookie mini camp.
The Cowboys are going to go with this group for at least this season, with the mindset that Quarterback Tony Romo can get these guys the ball now that Terrell Owens is no longer with the team and their running game will be successful.

Safety
The Cowboys have one starter, Ken Hamiln, who was a pro-bowler two years ago and was solid last season with 74 tackles, from the Free Safety position. After Hamlin, youth again becomes an issue.
Gerald Sensabaugh is most likely to start opposite Ken Hamlin. Sensabaugh spent the last four years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and, except for 2007—when he only played two games—Sensabaugh has played in all 16 games in the other three seasons. Last season Sensabaugh racked up 70 tackles and four interceptions from the Strong Safety position.
After Sensabaugh, Pat Watkins has the most experience but missed more than half the season last year with shoulder problems. Watkins has also underachieved in his three seasons with the Cowboys, even getting demoted in his rookie season by former Coach Bill Parcells. Because of this, he needs to have a great training camp to show coaches that he's ready to play.
Courtney Brown has played in limited action in the past two seasons but has a good chance to make a run at playing time if he can have another good training camp.
The long shots include DeAngelo Smith, who was drafted in the fifth round out of Cincinnati, and Michael Hamlin, who was also drafted in the fifth round, out of Clemson. These two won't see much time except on special teams but could become a great tandem in the future.
Hamlin and Sensabaugh will most likely start in the Cowboy's defensive backfield. They're both experienced and should do well, but if one of them gets injured, as many of the Cowboy's safeties did last season, it could be trouble.

The article is spot on with the possible addition of OL depth. I think we have anough younf guys that have abily to step up to fill in at OLB and CB.

Safety has been an issue on this team for years....every since Woody retired. Let's hope Sensabaugh or one of the young kids can finally fill that void....I have high hopes for Hamlin out of Clemson. He is a player.

The OL issue is a huge problem and supercedes both areas the author discussed. WR is not that big of a problem as we do have Witten and Bennett who I think will supplement in the production department, while the emphasis on the running game will make the inexperience less painful. It does depend on injuries, certainly, but I am not confident Kosier will be back completely and I don't trust any of our depth players.

If Safety is a big problem this year, I will be very surprised. Both safeties we took could end up playing a lot and Sensabaugh is getting good notice. I also think Hamlin will be better if he can trust who is playing next to him. It was very hard to let him roam much with Davis and Watkins as his running mates.

Safety has no depth but I still think it will be fine.

I'm not too worried about WR but no one really knows what will happen. If Romo has time to throw, I see no way he can't find some targets to throw to. I think they should motion and split Bennett outside some.

NT still bothers me. At the very least there is no proven depth.

OLB has no depth. And despite what some say, Spencer is not all that in the run yet. I suspect he'll be ok and will be this year. He just needs PT.

The Mo and the Mike is not strong vs the pass but I'll reserve that pending seeing how Brooking does.

Unless Brooking can play all 3 downs, we have no proven Nickel LB.

Our depth at CB is suspect although we have 3 good ones.

The OL depth is still a problem and IMO this is the biggest key for this club. They play well we can beat anyone.

OL depth, CB and ROLB didn't make the cuts?

CB and ROLB?

Newman everyone knows about, but Jenkins and Scandrick are going to be known to those outside of Dallas very soon. They are both terrific players who played well as rookies last year. Scandick in particular was excellent for us in the slot all year long. Either one of those second year guys are light years better than Henry was last season. Their speed and athleticism are well above Henry's. Gone are the days of Henry getting toasted by a fast WR and then standing around with palms pointing skyward with a puzzled look on his face.

The athleticism of the Cowboys secondary went up by a factor of ten the second Henry was traded.

As for the CB's after the top 3... Alan Ball is a CB who the coaches really like. He was slated to get a lot more playing time last year but when Dallas drafted Jenkins and then lucked out on Scandrick, Ball was stuck on the sidelines. The coaches are also thrilled with Mickens, who they had as a high round pick until he hurt his knee and couldn't run in the postseason games and workouts.

The Cowboys are thrilled with their CB position.

As for ROLB... I wouldn't call Ware a weakness. If you happened to be talking about the LOLB (SOLB) Spencer, then you are off base there too. Spencer is a way better athlete than Ellis ever was and had he not gotten hurt at the beginning of the year, he would have been the starter all last season. After watching film this offseason of every snap that Spencer took in 2008, the coaches knew that Spencer was going to keep Ellis on the bench and so they cut the veteran. Phillips said that Spencer stood out on film all season long at that position even going as far as to say that they thought many times that Spencer was Ware until they saw his number.

Considering that, I don't think many people would think SOLB would be a weakness for the Cowboys... and I certainly don't think many would consider Ware to be one.

The Backup OLB's are going to be inexperienced for sure, but Phillips really likes the two guys that will be backing up Spencer and Ware. In today's NFL, teams can't go three deep at every position. Having Spencer and Ware starting with rookies backing them up might not be ideal... but I certainly don't think it can be considered a weakness either.

EDIT: I do agree with you about OL depth. After the starters, there are questions at every position except for LG where the loser of the Kosier/Holland battle will provide good depth. Word is the coaches do like Doug Free, who is the LT backup and I think they are also pretty high on 3rd rounder Brewster as well.

Still, overall I'd agree that there are a lot of questions regarding OL depth.

I think Dallas success or failure is in the hands of the big boys up front. If the OL can protect and open up running lanes this team can go a long way.

If Flo goes down its a wrap. Same goes for any team's LT but we seem to be particularly inept when it comes to finding 'depth' there. We've got bodies but no players. Brewster may surprise me but we're putting a lot of our eggs in one basket hoping our bigs stay healthy.
