So I just finished looking at the plays from the second half Defense in todays game here is what I came up with feel free to correct my math.

In the second Half the Defense allowed 142 yards

Allowed 7 points

Allowed 4 first downs

Defense forced 3 turnovers.

While the first half was atrocious, the team made good adjustments and came out and did very well the 2nd half.

Thanks. I don't mean to get in the way of all the sky is falling threads, but I figured I would inject something into the conversation

The "d" did nut up in the second half and right at the end of the first half with the goal line stop (even if that was partially helped by Rattay's fumbled snap).

Looking at the drive chart I think we only gave up 128 yards in the second half.

I think that after the win over the Chargers, we realized that Dallas might just be a dominant team this year.

After the Commanders game, our hopes were suddenly dashed, and it seemed as if our dominance was so fragile as to be dashed in two minutes by a lob it up offense.

Today was just an example of how we are going to be tested as a defense from here on out. The defense made the necessary adjustments like you said, and with the rotation we are getting, we are doing beating other teams while giving our young rookies a chance to grow and get better.

As our defensive line improves with experience, we WILL be able to get that 4 man rush, while providing blanketing pass coverage in the process. I think at one point we had Ware, Spears and Canty in all at the same time. It's a promise of things to come.

Now, I look at the defense as inexperienced and young, but talented, with TONS of potential. I'm optimistic, but with a little bit more patience as they eek out wins.

By the end of the season, this defense will be MUCH better than it is now. And so will the entire team!

Its quite possible my math was wrong on yards I was doing them in my head and trying to add and subtract for penalties. 128 even better :)

I just did them with a calculator and the length of drive supplied on the drive chart. I can't overtax my brain trying to add them up in my head and then get all fancy taking away penalties...

I thought the poor first half defense was mostly due to hangover. And there really isn't anything you can do to fix it. The defense just came out a little flat and a little tentative. They looked unsure, and the Niners had a good gameplan.

By the time the second half rolled around, the defense realized they needed to step up. They made their adjustments. They just played.

We were dreadful in the first half...........so what you are saying is that adjustment should only be made at the half. What if they had scored 40 points in the first half, and only 7 in the second......would that have been alright with you?

My problem is that they take too long to make these adjustments...........whoopee, they did much better in the second half...........why couldn't they make those adjustments after the first drive?

Good post.

Our pass rush still sucked even in the second half though.

Did I say that at all? Can you point out the part of my thread that said that? What I stated was we came out flat and our D instead of falling apart rallied in the second half to help us win this game. Would you have prefered giving up 24 in the second half too?

I don't think it was a matter of adjustments. I think the D simply did their jobs better. They were playing scared the first half because they were still hurting from the Skins loss. It happens, especially to a young team with a new D. It's easy to shake that confidence. Our guys came out bad and got better as the game went on. They gave up a long drive in the first quarter, they gave up a huge play in the second quarter, then they started to settle down. Don't forget that 7 of those points they gave up in the first half came from an interception run back for a TD.

Look, if you want to be negative about the win and be all pissed off that's fine with me. But I saw a young team that struggled early and then gutted it out and played well in the second half in a game that they could have easily mailed in. And a come from behind win, against a team you are supposed to beat, could easily end up being more important to us than it would have been had we blown them out.

We had plenty of adjustments in the second half.

Namely we quit trying to match up with their 3-wide sets by using our standard 3-4.

We finally quit that nonsense and went to the nickel. If you want a good reason why the defense played better in the second half-- that was it.
