At the beginning of the season the Cowboys secondary was being ranked as one of the best in the league. With Newman, Henry, Glenn and Williams manning the most important postions on the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys had the making of a secondary that could shut down the best recieving corps any team could field on Sunday with a mixture of youth and experience. Todays NFL offenses have adapted to the high flying, passing for big chunks of yards and scoring 30 points a game philosophy. With the defenses being hampered by rules like the The Chuck and Hitting the QB below the knees or head, they are forced to adapt as well with better technique in pass defense. The Cowboys did that last night by holding one of the elite recieving tandems in the league to a total of 149 yards. Steve Smith was shadowed by Newman most of the game and held last years recieving leader in all categories to 6 catches for 55 yards. Keyshawn Johnson was held to only one catch for 19 yards. In total the passing defense gave up 0 TDs and had one INT by Roy Williams to seal the deal. Their performance last night will only fuel the fire and give them more confidence heading into next weeks game against a team with a trio of deep theats as

The Cowboys take on the Commanders with Santana Moss, Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle-El. The Cowboys secondary kept them in check the first game. They have to do it two in a row to keep pace in the tight division race. It does not get any easier in the next two to three weeks as they head to Arizona to take on Anquon Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald then back at home against the high powered offense of Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark of the Indianapolis Colts. These next few weeks will put the Cowboys secondary to the test to see how good they really are. Will last nights performance carry over to the next two games? Or will they be exposed to the likes of Peyton Manning who is arguably the best QB in the league. Time will only tell. If they can stay healthy, if Newman can continue his streak of games of not allowing a TD, and if the Dallas front seven can create pressure on the QB, then the Cowboys have a chance to take back the division and possibly fight for a chance at home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
