Thanks for those videos..that Belmont race still gives me chills. I just loved that horse. What a race! We'll never see that again.
I cried as a kid, it still makes me tear up. It was the most perfect race I ever saw a horse run. The horses in the field that day were awesome, and he ran into History leaving them in his wake. The photo of Turcotte looking back is one I cherish.DallasGirl50;3641434 said:Thanks for those videos..that Belmont race still gives me chills. I just loved that horse. What a race! Chic Anderson.DallasGirl50;3642011 said:He was a beautiful animal and a funny story..when I saw Big Red in Kentucky he was nothing but a big ole ham. He actually posed for pictures. He was even more beautiful in person and his handler told the group that was there that day that he was almost like a person..that he was king around there and the other horses even knew it.
I treasure all that. He was as fine a horse as God ever made. And those races he won still give me the chills.
Poor Sham. He just never had a chance.
The call of that Belmont race is classic. I forget the name of the announcer.
You love horses..go to Kentucky. Specifically go to the Kentucky Horse Park.

I heard it somewhere on the news,I believe, that during Secretariat's autopsy, they found that "Big Red's" heart was something like 2 1/2 times the normal size of other horses, which certainly had to help with his tremendous stamina. I wonder if his mother, who was known for stamina, also had a larger than normal heart.

Today we're PM'ing on Facebook. She tells me this, as best I can remember it,
"If there's a little piece of heaven for horse people, I'll walk through the Pearly Gates. I'll be 15 again. St. Peter will put me in the saddle, tell me "There's a mile and a half, see what he can do." and it'll be Secretariat."
It doesn't sound silly to me. I envy you.DallasGirl50;3643801 said:I hope she gets to ride him too. It was an honor for me just to stand close to that horse. That sounds silly but that's the way I've always felt.
