Selection of Tyron Smith spoke loudly

Think about the deal Jacksonville gave Washington in order to move up and take QB Gabbert. There was some thought that Washington might take a QB, so I think there's very little doubt that Jacksonville made that exact same offer to Dallas one pick ahead of Washington. If we were seriously going to be happy with Smith or Castonzo, we'd have jumped on that extra second rounder because one or both would have been there.

This speaks loudly to me.

1. It says Tyron Smith wasn't just a guy or just a value pick; he was really the guy we wanted all along at that spot and we weren't going to risk losing him, not even for an extra 2nd round pick, #56.

2. I think it clearly shows that Smith is going to move to left tackle, as suggested by Kiper. I expect Smith will even begin at left tackle on day 1 with Free going back to his more natural fit on the right side...most of us didn't expect this. However, if we were just looking for a RT, we'd have jumped on that 2nd round pick from the Jags.

3. Some worried and wondered why Smith didn't play left tackle at USC. My take? The kid is only 20, yet he's been an active player since his freshman year. USC isn't one of these teams that runs the spread...they want to run the football with a bevy of RBs every year. While Smith was USC's best pass blocker, they paired him and kept him on the right side with their best interior run blocker because Smith, very strong for his young age, was also their best run blocker, so it only made sense to keep him on the right side as long as the other tackle didn't underperform.

I'm still anxious for a CB in this draft, regardless of what the front office is saying about Ball. At #40, I would love Aaron Williams of Texas for CB/S or Marcus Gilcrist of Clemson for CB/S...both are excellent athletes who have played both positions in the NFL. Both could start competing at CB but also move to safety if needed because both are physical and good tacklers.

Can't wait for tonight.

I agree with your post except for the fact that I think that Smith plays RT, Free had a good year at LT last year and I expect him to have a better year.

.......what kind of sense does it make to have a kid who played RT in college protect Romo's blind side? Kiper's hair spray is seeping into his brain. Free did a great job last year: sign him long term and leave him there. Get too cute and Romo will be hurt again like he was last season.

I say put him at left. He is going to be our best lineman so do it.

The kid weighed 280 when he played their last game against UCLA. I hope he's a natural 300 lber. Even the writers in LA were asking how he put 30 lbs on in such a short time.

Not right away.

And where do these people come up with this "Free's natural position is right tackle" garbage?

Good post. As for tonight I think it will either be DB or DL. Da'Quan Bowers is still out there

Just because Free did a good job last year doesn't mean that Smith isn't far more talented and a superior left tackle. We could leave Free where he is, and we may do that, but some of us think the only reason we HAD to have Smith and not one of the other tackles like Castonzo is because of his superior skills for the left side. If Free, a far less talented player, could start on the right side one year and move successfully to the left side the next year, then why not Smith.

Maybe Smith is the best of the two for the left side, and maybe Free is the best of the two for the right side as he's a very good run blocker.

That's the reasoning...the Cowboys won't do it if Smith isn't ready to get the job done, but if he is, what sense does it make not to do it?

Remember, he's only 20 years old...he's still growing. He was playing for USC at 18 and 19 years old his freshman and sophomore years. I think the weight gain was natural, and I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up weighing 320 in two years, just as he matures.

By watching him at the position the year before last, when he was excellent in the run game. He did a very good job for us at left tackle this year, but until we had to move him to left tackle to replace Flozell, there's a reason he was getting most of his time backing the right side for Columbo.

He backed up both sides, not just rt.

Moving free to rt and a rookie who played rt incollege to Lt would be incredibly stupid.

you cannot use a top 10 pick on a RT...especially when there were plenty of other guys you could have picked later in the first that could play RT. This guy was drafted to play LT.

Okay, I have to correct my own erroneous thinking on this one.
Just read this on ESPN.

Marc Colombo's spot in jeopardy
April, 29, 2011 Apr 2912:04AM CTEmail Print Comments4 By Todd ArcherIRVING, Texas -- Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said No. 9 pick Tyron Smith is penciled in to be the team’s right tackle in 2011, which puts Marc Colombo’s roster spot in jeopardy.

Oh, for crying out loud.
