Pedigree. Alabama has had a DL go in the 1st or 2nd round every year for the past 6 years. It's a factory. Some of those players have been better than others, but they pretty much never just flat-out suck. There's like a solid Saban floor of mediocrity.

Likewise, Mathis's one late-bloomer year of big production is easy to explain. He was buried behind other future NFLers, and then his junior season got cut short by Rona.

He's got great size at 6'4' 310 and has the arm length that Quinn covets. At age 23 he's maxed out, but he's got pretty good strength.

He's a balanced DT that graded well as both a pass rusher and a run stopper.

IMO, Mathis is a better fit at 3T than at 1T, but could probably play 1T better than anyone on our roster right now. It's a thin DT class after Davis, Wyatt, and Jones, and Mathis is one of the few starter-quality players available if you pass on them.

He has 9 sacks in 2021 as a DT and is strong vs the run relative to other pass rushing DTs.
- He could play 1-tech or 3-tech in the NFL.

I have the natural skepticism of most fans on players from alabama going into the pros; being surrounded by more talent than any other team quite often masks weaknesses.
That said, I would not complain if he was the pick.

He’s a weird evaluation bc people see the sack numbers and think he’s a good pass rusher but he’s actually more of a run clogger with limited pass rush ability due to be a linear athlete.

That being said, probably has higher potential as a run stopper than anyone on our roster so I’d take him in the mid rounds.

I'd take him in a heartbeat with our 3rd .........
