Go to the best play bracket and get everyone you can to vote for Earl Campbell gets his jersey Ripped off.

http://www.nfl.com/bracketology

Watch the play. it starts of with the most beautiful and textbook lowering of the helmet I have ever seen. It is representative of what they are removing from the game.

lets get this play voted up there.. a play that would be called back if it happened today.

Link to play video below.

Watched it. Had to watch the Gale Sayers punt return a few times. Was admiring the vision and lateral acceleration.

Nice run, but jeez, protect that football! No wonder he had a propensity to put the ball on the ground.

you are making the case for him. Earl is physically and mentally diminished today.

and firefighters get burns... the point isn't whether or not it is actually preventing injury. It is whether or not the players know this million dollar job is dangerous... they do.. so do the fire fighters.
firefighters choose to brave the dangers for noble reasons..

these players choose to brave theirs for less noble reasons... but ask Earl if he knew the game was dangerous... ask all of em if they know it is dangerous.. ask if they would still play...

New info comes out every year about how concussions are bad... I haven't seen one player not declare for the draft or just decide to retire saying. "I decided it was just too dangerous guys."

apples and oranges

First, firefighters actually save lives and help people. Football players entertain.

Firefighters have helmets, breathing apparatus, bunker gear that is rigorously tested. They have national standards and regulations to protect them. They have developed IR technology, safer apparatus, cleaning standards, health care tests etc............

Secondly every profession has a legal obligation to make it as safe as is practible for their employees.

Third, many of these guys are barely 21. Many of them haven't a clue as to their mortality, how to handle money, fame or the long term risks of their profession. Many don't have any idea of what to do with their lives after devoting half of it playing a game.

Little league where I live now requires a lot more training and monitoring for concussions. It isn't the first concussion that typically causes problems it is the subsequent ones while the brain is healing.

The NFL could cut down on lots of injuries. First, stringent testing of PED's. Second, play on grass. the first would decrease the size and both would decrease the speed. Third, you might just end kickoffs where guys get a running start at the return team and the returner. Fourth, they could shorten the season. Instead they are trying to lengthen for monetary reasons.

If you think the owners truly care more about the health of their employees than they do about their money, you got another think coming.

They could also eliminate blitzing... maybe even tackling. we could go to two hand touch.. that would maximize player safety.

I'll vote for it just because it is a fantastic play. When he lowers his head and goes straight through the defenders chest is among my favorite NFL clips.

Also, how in the world is the Holy Roller losing to that play of Polamalu jumping over the line? Biased Pittsburgh fanbase is the only thing I can think of.

When the owners vote in favor 31-1, it's obviously not Roger Goodell's fault.

True. Goodell does not make the rules owners do the commissioner office enforces the rules.

They are only putting out these new rules because the older players are trying to get every penny they can out of the NFL. The owners will probably keep passing new rules to protect players so they can cover their butts in the long run.

There will be a point where these rules catch up to the popularity of the game. But that day is not today and until the NFL starts to lose money, they'll keep their secondary agenda of not losing money to law suits.

Earl has the same narrowing of the spine problem that Irvin has. It went misdiagnosed for a long while and he underwent several unnecessary surgeries that made his pain worse. He also did a lot of "self-medicating", trying to alleviate the debilitating pain, which made him appear impaired.

He's been working with physical therapists and is doing much better, especially compared to where he was just a few years ago.

I do think you have to strike a balance between preserving the game and player safety. I do think at times the league goes overboard but player safety has always been in the mix. Heck at one time they did not have head gear yet over the years the head gear (helmet has gone from leather to what we see today) better light weight knee braces to replace the old bulky braces. Certain rules changes like no head slapping, chop blocks as well as others have helped in protecting players. Player safety has to be part of the equation but again the league has to be able to strike a balance.

I'm of the belief that the headgear has lead to more injury. these guys feel invincible out there and play with reckless abandon... if you wan't to stop neck/head injuries. go back to leather helmets... guys won't just spear people with their noggins anymore and will be more cautious.
