FEATURED September 11th Attack - 25 years ago today

It was my sixteenth birthday, and the second day of my sophomore year of high school. I thought about joining the military after high school but decided against it because I have a mild form of Autism. I do miss the brief sense of National unity that occurred during the immediate aftermath of the attacks. Nowadays , it seems that everyone is constantly at each others throats

CNN (powered mostly by AOL at the time) got so busy they had to resort to mostly text only website for a couple days.

My condolences to all those who were affected or lost their lives that day. The reach of 9/11 went far beyond the attacks themselves. It reached the men and women who went overseas to fight for our freedom, seeking justice, and driven by an understandable desire for retaliation.

I'll never forget that moment for as long as I live. I was working in Seattle at the time, working nights, doing data work for the grocery chain Albertsons. I had a Nextel phone (remember those?) at the time, and one of my really good friends kept alerting me on the walkie-talkie feature. I finally answered, pretty annoyed because I knew he knew I was working nights, and all he said was, “Turn on the TV.”

I asked him why this mattered so much, and he insisted I just turn on the TV, and that's all he would say. I asked what channel and he said it didn’t matter. I turned it on, and sure enough, the first channel I turned to was showing the towers. I just sat there, completely shocked and in silence that morning.

None of us went to work that night. We just sat and watched, along with the rest of the world, in horror.

I just found out from my brother that a childhood friend of mine, "T.J." died in the WTC collapse. He was on my little league baseball team, a very good player. He was also a child actor, playing a character in a soap opera, playing the lead in a movie called The Prince of Central Park, and some of you old timers may remember him as the kid in a tree in a Snickers commercial.

My brother told me about a picture,from the 80's and I found it online, in which T.J. is sitting on steps, and the words nine eleven are written in wrought iron behind him. I can't seem to use Imgur to post pictures anymore, or I'd post it for you.

Anyway, he was a really nice kid, and I liked him a lot. I hope he went quickly, and painlessly.

I appreciate the thought, but I hadn't seen the guy since the mid 70's.

It's pretty scary to think there are people out there so willing to inflict massive and devastating harm to civilians. The WTC was a big target for the extremists who brought those buildings down, playing their hand only 8 years earlier with a failed bombing attempt in a WTC lower-level parking garage.

On 9-11, I was at my desk in our Borough Office in the South Bronx when a colleague jumped up from his desk and said a plane hit the WTC. Once it became clear that a commercial airliner hit the building, there was no doubt it was an act of terrorism.

On Thursday afternoon, 9-13, our role as agency reps for the NYCOEM kicked in and we were on our way down to the site. We had to set up three of our NYC schools in that area for support of the rescue and recovery efforts.

My drive down an eerily quiet (except for first responders and emergency personnel) FDR Drive toward Ground Zero that afternoon was surreal. I never imagined seeing that road and the four bridges crossing the East River to Queens and Brooklyn virtually empty. Turning up West Street toward my destination (Stuyvesant HS) the devastation was unspeakable and the scope of the attack became clear. Even though I carried a camera with me at all times for work, I could not bear the thought of photographing the result of pure evil I saw in front of me.

For the next 6 months we pulled shifts at Pier 92 then serving as the NYCEOC. WTC 7, our EOC office until 9-11, was badly damaged, caught fire and collapsed that afternoon after the two towers went down.

God bless all the souls who perished that day and continue to succumb to illness due to their work at the site. I will never forget.

As a veteran and patriot I get irritated when I think about it. I won’t comment on it much as I probably don’t have the ability or desire to keep it within the guidelines. Horrible day for country one that continues to haunt us. God bless the USA. I remember pulling out of my driveway heading for my job and not understanding the extent of it till I had a chance to get in front of a tv

I still remember where I was the morning of the attack.

I will always remember and I'm still angry.

Gob Bless all the families affected at ground zero and on the flights. I thank you for figuring the good fight.

I still get a profound sense of grief and anger when I think about 911. Watching the videos or seeing pictures of it only deepens those feelings.

The fact that they caught so many of the perpetrators and made them pay for what they did that day does little to help relieve those feelings… though I am very glad they did and showed the world what happens when the United States is together and focused against a common foe.

I didn’t know anyone who perished that day and I live far away from NYC, so I can only imagine what New Yorkers still feel every year at this time. They are the one’s that I mainly think about every year.

Still vivid in memory cant believe it was that long ago. Was driving from Richardson to Plano when I heard it over radio. Been a topsy turvy period of 25 years with added security controls for air travel and other security measures. Went to the memorial in NYC only last year.
