The feud between Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods was taken to another level on Tuesday night.

According to The Guardian's Ewan Murray, Garcia was at the European Tour's gala players' awards dinner, where he was asked a question about Woods.

His answer could be construed as a racist remark:

Garcia was asked in jest if he would have the American round for dinner one night during the upcoming US Open. "We will have him round every night," García said. "We will serve fried chicken."

Later on, the Spaniard apologized, saying that his comment was a "silly remark" and not meant to come off in a "racist manner."

Well, without getting this overly political, there has been a long standing myth, I think, in this country that Europeans are not racist. Nothing could be further from the truth in many cases. They have racially insensitive people just like we do.

I'm not a Tiger Woods fan, per say. I don't hate him but I'm not one of the many who are devout either. However, that comment was not only very, very wrong, it was off the charts stupid. Good luck with your endorsement career here in the states there Serg.

Good Grief

Dumb thing to say in this situation, obviously.

I've never understood the food-related race 'jokes' anyway. It just seems silly to try to disparage a race based off of what they eat. 'Yeah, we like pizza. Good one!' Who cares? There are probably some exceptions I'm not thinking of right now where there's a food-related slur that actually has some teeth, but mostly, they're just not funny and not really actual insults, anyway.

I agree however I will say with Zoeller is was a bit different only because there was not this hatred between the 2 as there is with Tiger and Sergio.

People who know Zoeller know it was all in fun and he and Tiger did meet and have dinner afterwards to iron things out.

I don't see this happening with Sergio and Tiger.

I didn't realize Fuzzy's was a joke............it reads a lot worse than Sergio's.

At the 1997 Masters, Zoeller said, "So you know what you guys do when he gets in here? Pat him on the back, say congratulations, enjoy it. And tell him not to serve fried chicken next year .... or collared greens or whatever the hell they serve."

Here's the video:

A few days later, Zoeller was caught making a similar joke about watermelon to a black friend at a course in South Carolina. From the LA Times:
The black golfer, Victor McBryde, called to Zoeller, "Hey, Fuzzy," at the Thornblade Classic charity pro-am in Greenville, S.C., and Zoeller responded, "Go get you some fried chicken." McBryde answered by telling Zoeller not to forget the cornbread.
"How about some watermelon?" Zoeller said.

Yeah it was insensitive but I think it was Fuzzy giving Tiger the business, all in fun. Still not a smart thing to say on Fuzzy part.

100% accurate. After all, it's not like racism was suddenly invented when this country was founded.

Racism, especially when it pertains to classification, has been a part of every civilization since time began.

What's wrong here? Tiger Woods is a disgrace and deserves disdain. People need thicker skin.

You want to say that he's a lying cheating womanizing whatever, that's fine and I would not argue one way or the other on that.

You want to imply racial inequity, simply because he is half black, by using some stupid remarks about Fried Chicken, then that's no longer about the thickness of your skin. That's about the color of it and it has no place here. Anybody can think what they want but you can't advertise it here and there is no room for error on that. It's a zero tolerance thing on this board.

I don't think he is a disgrace no more than Michael Irvin, I take it you feel the same about Irvin given how he was cheating on his wife with hookers and stripers while doing drugs or is that alright? I respect him as a golfer but do not know him as a person same with Irvin I like him as a player I don't know him as a person.

Having said that Sergio comments I think had more to do with his disliking of Tiger than it did racism but no doubt it had a racist connotation, anyone with common sense would know that. Why not say steak instead of fried chicken? Come on let’s not kid ourselves it was meant as an insult and it back fired on Garcia.

This is a football board. Why not have typical and frank conversations that take place at a stadium or bar daily?

Because this is not a Stadium or a Bar. I'm cool with just talking football and to be honest, that's really kind of what the Staff tends to lean towards as well.

However, we do understand that there are other things going on in the world as well. That's why we have off topic, as well as other forums. However, top to bottom, we all believe that politics, religion, topics that lead to racial issues are not a part of what we do here, nor are they a part of what we want here. There are plenty of other boards for that and we just believe that this board, primarily, is for Dallas Cowboy Football and because we have to have other teams on the schedule, NFL Football in general.

It's better that way and it's not flexible.

I can't believe, here it is 2013, and race is still even an issue at all.

I think it is so cool that we have so many different nationalities, ethnic groups, races.

I love to talk to people different from myself and ask questions about their background, heritage, traditions, .. family history, etc.

I just donated blood to the Red Cross, and the girl had long hair on the sides, with real short in the back, .. colored pink and purple. I was asking her all about it.

I was stopped at a small grocery store while out on a ride on my motorcycle the other day. This guy comes up and we're talking about our bikes and it looks like he has two big mirrors for earrings, .. a little smaller than a dime. Turns out they were big holes and not mirrors. I asked him all about them.

I work with people from Eastern Canada, Poland, India, .. I love talking with them about their homeland, customs, family, etc.

My only prejudice is against people that don't take care of their home, their property, their vehicles, their family, .. that don't work and contribute.

It is so cool learning about other people, cultures, etc, .. glad we are all different and can learn from each other.

Sergio can say whatever he wants, but it only makes him appear ignorant IMO.

Whatever.

Who doesn't love fried chicken? I could eat it every day. For the life of me, I don't know how someone can get offended over food.

I like it too but unless you been living in a cave when someone starts talking fried chicken and watermelon (by the way I like that too) it is often done as a racial insult.

Sergio is good about flapping his lips not so good at winning championships. Not even on the same level as the man he loves to hate. :laugh2:

I'm guessing you'd like us to only have these frank discussions with really ignorant white folks? You're not having those discussions with black people making stupid comments like this or you're not having conversations.

I've been to plenty of sporting events and there has never been a discussion about black people and what they may or may not want to eat at the game so this daily crap you're spewing is just that...crap.

Another internet tough guy who wants to act like he goes around talking ignorant like this on a normal basis when we all know very well you don't and wouldn't dare.

Having an opinion about what has been given and taken for granted is not offensive - unless people are out there looking to be offended.
