Serious look at the remaining free agent safety market

There are still five free agent safeties available that I think Dallas may have some interest in. That is why they continue to say its still a deep pool of talent and its why they are still waiting on the price to go down. If two of these five get signed, I expect you'll see Dallas move very quickly on one or two of the remaining three.

1. Brodney Pool
2. Dashon Goldson
3. Gerald Sensebaugh
4. Abe Elam
5. Donte Whitner


There are also a few other names out there that could be possibilities but they each carry somes excess bagage.

1. Tanard Jackson - suspended until 09/22 for violating substance abuse policy 3 times.
2. Bernard Pollard - regressed again last year and just isn't very good.
3. Atari Bigby - Very good but 3 straight injury plagued seasons.
4. Darren Sharper - Old.

I'm sure there are a few others but as we can see there are still guys out there that will give Dallas improved play over what they had last year and what they currently have. I think Jerry wants to wait until there are only two or three guys they are interested left to see if the prices will come down. Personally, I'd like to see them wrap up Elam because he knows the system and then wait for the prices to come down to get the 2nd guy even if it means settling for and taking a chance on a guy like Bigby.

None of them are long term answers though.

Fact is our safety position is very likely NOT going to be a bright spot this year. Should be better than last year (Ball was that horrible) but that's not saying much.


Our best hopes of stopping the pass is to destroy the qb before he chuks it deep.

For sure. I'm really hoping it was a sophomore slump for Jenkins. I'm not too worried about Newman though.

I wouldn't mind giving Bigby a chance if it was a low risk type situation. IIRC, the guy can ball if healthy.

anybody relying on barry church is insane. IMO he will get cut. Mccray and Sedejo are both gonna bve core ST's players, Church not so much and he's way too slow for S imo. He's on the outs.

Give me Dashon Goldson and Elam please although i'm not a buig admirer of abes he at least knows the D.

I agree. If Elam can find a team willing to pay 5 mill a year more power to him but that is crazy. That is top money for top safeties not money you pay to a guy who is avg.

What happened last year on defense was a total effort. For the right price I would give him a second chance to pair up with anyone other than Ball.

This is exactly why i don't understand all the "we haven't done anything in FA" talk. Our area of concern at S can and will be filled. The talent pool is roughly the same now as it was when FA started. When these players start getting deals, you will see us go after the one or two we want. Right now, the longer we wait, the better the price is for us.

I agree, but on the flip side Ryan's defense is pretty complex and the sooner we sign a safety the sooner he can start learning the plays.

we all know what the answer is .. whatever 2 players that are willing to accept the least amount of money .. it's become so painfully obvious with jerry about how he coveted 1 player (asomugha) and would have made an exception to open up the checkbook .. i'm sure the reason why elam has yet to sign is because he wants more than what jerry's willing to pay .. how many more examples besides (spears, coleman & hatcher) do you need .. they haven't overpaid to bring any player in this off season not their own players and not outside players

there were several very good safeties out there, as well as, dlineman and safeties, but they all want to be paid good money and jerry apparently felt there was only 1 player worth overpaying and that was asomugha

my guess is they resign sensabaugh and whomever else is willing to come here on a discount

so basically your defense is going to be almost exactly as it was last year

unfortunately they did not address their biggest holes defensively in the draft and they haven't addressed in free agency either

much like when jerry hired wade phillips he's putting all his faith in rob ryan and assuming he can take any player and have a great defense

Not necessarily. When these players start getting deals, the talent pool becomes thinner and we become more desperate. But you're right from the standpoint that there seems to be a pretty decent number of safeties on the market.

Sadly, they all sound like they're a bunch of JAGs from what I've read.

and to make matters worse, he played poorly last year.

simply hasn’t shown enough to be kept around. He was better in 2010 than he was in 2009 but still wasn’t serviceable. His pass coverage simply isn’t good enough for a free safety, and predominant responsibility for the big plays given up by San Fran over the past few years lies with him.

He basically had a few big hits which makes for good TV and had a couple of turnovers two years ago.
