Bored? Here’s five old articles that concern Wade Phillips.

The first article, written while Phillips was head coach in Buffalo, talks a bit about the Doug Flutie – Rob Johnson controversy in Buffalo. Many believe that Phillips’ (mis)handling of the QBs contributed to Phillips’ firing:

Phillips plays musical QBs -- again

The next two articles were written around the time of Phillips’ firing from the Bills. Seems that the last straw in Buffalo was Phillips’ refusal to fire his special teams’ coach. Recall that special teams were a very sensitive topic in Buffalo. The year before, they lost on the Music City Miracle special teams play. That special teams coach was fired after the Music City Miracle and replaced with a new guy, but the Bills’ special teams performed poorly under the new coach. Phillips wanted to reassign, but not fire, his coach. The owner disagreed.

This late 2005 article touches on the rags to riches story of the San Diego Chargers defense under defensive coordinator Wade Phillips:

Gil Brandt wrote the following article three months ago. You’ve probably read it already, but if not, it’s worth a glance:

Thanks, ZC. Always enjoy reading those. I'm had fun watching some of his old Buffalo teams on NFL Network, too.

After hearing the PC today, I'm even more impressed with Phillips. There might have been a perception that he was just a "Gee whiz, I'm a good ol' Texas boy happy to have this here job" type who would be too soft after Parcells, but today he sounded a lot more serious and determined than when he was hired. He wasn't all sunshine and daffodils, either -- sounded like he wasn't 100% pleased and knows the team has a lot to work on. There's definitely a driven coach inside that laid-back persona.

And the comment about the guys on their cell phones "Talking to their five or whoever" seriously made me LOL. Like Parcells, this guy has a sense of humor when he needs it.
