In deconstructing our upcoming Chiefs battled, he said (loosely paraphrasing) "we're the better team and we are supposed to win this game. However, it will be tough going against a more formidable squad".

That aligns directly with my early thoughts regarding this game. While the Giants game was more important in terms of divisional slotting, this game carries higher importance in terms of overall team confidence in their abilities to carry the new schemes forward. I think we win this game and gain the confidence to go on a bit of an early season run. In my season predictions I called this a win.

Chiefs: W - Cmon now.. It's the Chiefs AKA the perpetual rebuilders. 2-0

Little overconfidence there with the perpetual reference.. While I may have been more confident several weeks ago, It hasn't waned much. We will win a tough one in KC.

Major congrats to Shango on the news of the new baby.

Shameless Brian Waters plug. I can't wait to see him plugged in tomorrow!

I feel the exact same way, we are certainly the better team. If we lose that game it will be due to us not executing vs. them outright beating us.

Well, I like Shango, but I don't exactly characterize our next opponent as "more formidable". I do, however, agree that it will be a tough game.

More formidable (my paraphrase) simply means a tougher match up at this moment in time. Are you saying the Giants are better than the Chiefs right now? A number of element will cause me to disagree with you. Having Andy Reid will automatically equate to three more wins. Alex Smith is a very good QB protected by a solid offensive line and their WRs are no pushovers. They run a lot of quick trap plays to free up Jamaal Charles for big yardage. I'm confident our LBs will squash that scheme but the bottom line is they're going to give us a bigger test.

That KC front 7 is very good too. It's going to be a fun game to watch from both sides.

Not overly concerned with our 30th ranked defense and the 400+ yards they allowed because the Saints won the Super Bowl with a bad defense?

The Saints had twice the offense we have. They were an offensive machine.

I'd much rather see the defense just get better much better than come up with reasons why it might be o.k. to be bad on that side of the ball.

I agree, we can't be satisfied with the way the defense played and just hope for the best. However, having said that, I believe that barring catastrophic injuries it will keep getting better and better as the season progresses, just because of gaining more experience in the scheme, and hopefully getting some players back. It's anybody's guess, but it seems logical that more experience will equal better performance.

My main concern is staying healthy. If we can escape further injuries we will definitely improve and when we get some guys ( Spencer, Rat) back that will make us a better team. I really think staying healthy will keep us afloat.

Sarge, I hear your point but also believe that our defense will continue to improve as the season progresses. That Super Bowl winning Saints defense was atrocious and it never improved during the season. As CowboyPhan noted, we have the talent to improve on the field and in the booth. Stark difference imo.

The Chiefs game will not be easy. However, Dallas should win.

This reminds me exactly of the two first games last year. We come out with good victories against the Giants, with "odds against us", then play a team that's on the cusp of contention (Seattle/KC), feeling on top of the world, then we get punched in the mouth. Still, I'm hopeful we can win, but it's just eerily similar for me

Wait, so we have the 30th ranked defense but our defense is why we won the game?

You can come up with any reason you want as to why we won the game. The defensive stats tell another truth. Shouldn't be ignored.

Yup.

This would be exactly why I mentioned the real test in week two against an emerging KC team. Let's not forget our wonderful week one win last year. We then turned around and ran into a Seattle buzzsaw in week two. More perspective.

I really think measuring stats from one week of play will get us nowhere. We need a bigger sample pool to truly understand where our defense is slotted against the others around the league. The variables are in place to produce a consistently improving opportunistic defense this year.

The Cowboys always manage to lose at least one game every season they're suppose to win and those are the games that come back to haunt them. This season they're going to have to win all the games they're suppose to win and some they're not suppose to win if they're going to make the playoffs. They have a good opportunity to start off 3-0 this season with the Chiefs and Rams coming up. The first 4 games of this season is the softest part of their schedule. The Cowboys need to pile up some wins early because if they dig themselves a hole the first 6 weeks of the season they're going to have a difficult time digging their way out.

I agree one game is not enough, overall to evaluate the defense, or anything for that matter. Having said that, starting off the season giving up over 400+ yards is cause for concern as far as I'm concerned.
