Alexander, Seahawks agree on eight-year deal
Jay Glazer The No. 1 free agent on the open market is now off the market.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms with Pro-Bowl running back Shaun Alexander on a whopping eight-year, $62 million deal that includes a total of more than $15 million in the first year in bonuses (signing and roster) and salary.

The Alexander deal is not contingent upon a new CBA getting done as the Seahawks have the necessary cap space to make such a move. However, the contract still has to get approved by the NFL front office and Alexander needs to sign the contract.
The league's MVP was wise to take such a deal as the running back market in free agency will likely be much lower than several big-named veterans may think. In addition, Alexander didn't want to leave the Seahawks.
Alexander broke the NFL's single-season touchdown mark this past season, helping push the Seahawks to the NFC title. Now Seattle must turn their attention to Pro-Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson.
It's unclear how the deal is structured with regards to how much cap space this deal takes up in the first year of the new contract. Seattle had a decent amount of salary cap room heading into this free agent period. Now that Alexander is off the market Edgerrin James, Chester Taylor and Jamal Lewis as well as DeShaun Foster (transition tag) will try to follow up in a very slim market.

Very poor financial decision on his part. IMO. Stupid to do a deal that can be voided by a team going forward into a new CBA or uncapped years.

Maybe not. According to ESPNNEWS, the contract offers 50 million in guaranteed money that cannot be voided.

I think he said 15 million, not 50. Big difference.

But I wasn't listening that close.

The deal will be good for the first year at least and he will get 15 mil out of that because the new CBA does not effect the 2006 season (except for salary cap which is not an issue here). I think he is wise to take the deal and go with it; the worst he can do is get 15 mil for next year and that ain't hay.

It would buy a lot of hay. It could be a pile of manure by the time this CBA gets done. If the CBA gets done, it could raise the salary cap by more than $300 million league wide. This was an attempt to stay with his team, and I commend that. It was a poor business decision. If he was smart, he would have put a contingency on the cba not going through. He would not have been as marketable in 08 and he could get hurt in the next 2 years. This uncapped crap in 07 is a joke. There are so many restrictions that it isn't even funny.
