Shaun White

Ugh...I wish I hadn't clicked on this.

Take it from someone who worked in the industry.....Shaun White isn't even the best US snowboarder from his own town. He's a laughing stock to real snowboarders everywhere. An embarrassment. He's good at one thing, and one thing only, the halfpipe...an aspect of snowboarding the few snowboarders even give a damn about.

He's the "American Choppers" of snowboarding, someone created out of media hype that garners the interest of millions that don't really know jack **** about the industry. He has ZERO respect from his snowboarding peers, that should tell you all you need to know.

You want to see real snowboarding? Go watch "That's it, That's All" or "Art of Flight". The things they do in that video would make SW wet his pants.

Best US athlete ever? Absolutely laughable.

Kelly Slater on the other hand...should most definitely be in the discussion.

The Art of Flight is awesome...but let's not think that the permanent RedBull advertising is all that different in terms of "media hype."

I've boarded since I was 11, so twelve years or so, and to not respect what Shaun White does is ridiculous. If his peers don't respect him, that's just commentary on them, it has nothing to do with Shaun White. All the guy does is go out and win gold medals...not respecting that stems purely from jealousy imo.

And saying all he's good at is halfpipe is also a bit ridiculous considering he's won X Games gold in slopestyle 5 times and has won gold twice in skateboarding. The guy is ridiculous. I already pulled back on the best US athlete thing, but saying he's only good at one thing is just silly.

Are you seriously comparing those two films to a guy that is sponsored by Target?

I've been snowboarding for 22 years. I was sponsored for 4, ran a shop for 3, and was a sales rep for almost 8 years. I've been to SIA 4 times. I built a Terrain Park for 8, and was good friends with the guy the built the first c-box and have worked with many of the guys that have competed in, and won, the Superpark comps. I've met Shaun White. I've met hundreds of other pro riders. One of my best friends is a pro snowboarder.

If you think for one second that those guys' dislike of Shaun white stems from jealously, you're in way over your head in this discussion.

I'll spare you the lecture on "contest" snowboarding, but again, if you think those guys on the podium are the finest athletes the sport has to offer.....all I can do is shake my head.

The guy does the same damn run 1100 times a year so he's got it nailed. He develops 1-2 tricks in a sponge pit every season and adds them to his bag. This isn't snowboarding. It's choreographed crap that he's been training on since he was 4. The 100 he got was total BS...there is no such thing as a perfect run. It sure does get some media attention though, doesn't it?

When Shaun White gets off the corduroy...we can talk. Until then, he's just a pipe tool.

But hey, if you like his tight pants and fluffy mane, by all means....

Shaun White has been invited to Supernatural....you think he shows?

I'd eat every word I've said here if he grew a pair and showed up and won.

What is that?

You gotta fill in those of us who aren't cool snowboarders or skiers.

What's the difference between Target and Redbull?

Why do they dislike him then if you have all this inside info? Because he gets attention from the media? Because he doesn't do backcountry stuff? He does **** that nobody else does, like it or not. Does it mean he's the best snowboarder, not necessarily, but nobody else has the skins on the wall to say otherwise.

I agree the 100 was bs...but that's just about the best run you're going to see, and I'm not arguing that White get's more media hype in the public. But to act like those 1 or 2 tricks isn't ridiculous is closed-minded imo. Why
doesn't everybody just go out and do it if it's so simple? His ability to spin and his amplitude are ridiculous, whether he does it in a more commercial setting or not. I don't understand any hatred towards the guy.

Travis Rice is great, but you don't have to like him or White. They do different things. Supernatural is misleading - and is an event created with heavy sponsorship by RedBull and is part of their "signature series," a total media hype and $ driven TV event - because they're building the courses if I'm not mistaken...it's still not true backcountry. The way I read it, it's basically a combination of slopestyle and big air, it's just set up to be bigger. But with 10 meteres of powder to land on. There's no reason to think Shaun White couldn't go there and do well imo.
