I believe I read on the ESPN site that he was put on IR, so I am not sure
of his availability this year.
From what I read it is minor IR, meaning as soon as he is healthy, he will be released and he could play for any other team this year.

He started to decline right after he got back from suspension and due to continuous testing had to remain clean.

I doubt he remained clean during that time or even now. There are plenty of substances he could take that cannot or are not tested for by the league. He probably did not use the same substance that caused him to fail his test, but I doubt that made him shy away from other performance enhancing drugs.

He wrecked his knee. It was a major injury. I don't know if his PED use had an impact on that injury or not. It doesn't matter because he still had to deal with the injury and it was not an easy one to recover from.

I remember all the debates on this board about us taking Ware over Meriman.

Boy , glad we did not !

at the time he was outperforming Ware ... and people were all over BP about how he was misusing him

there was also a poster who I cannot for the life of me remember who said something like "the thing about Merriman is that sometime down the line, something very bad will come out that makes us so happy we didn't take him"

He actually wasn't outperforming Ware at the time. He had more sacks than Ware, but sacks aren't the only thing that matter. Ware was making more tackles, forcing more fumbles and also doing more in coverage at that time. Some people were focusing too much on sack totals and nothing else. You look at the whole picture and Ware was outperforming Merriman back then. And it's not as if Ware wasn't getting sacks.

I'd take him over Brandon Williams. And at least Lights Out knows how to get hyped on the field, like a Ray Lewis/Joey Porter

I would at least bring him in and kick the tires if he's available. There's nothing wrong with giving him a look at camp next year to see if he has anything left.

Uh, no.

He was a pass-rushing beast in 2006 after his suspension (8.5 sacks in 5 games).
He was a pass-rushing beast for the first 13 games of 2007 (11.5 sacks in 13 games).
Then he wrecked his knee.
He's had 5 sacks since.

It's ridiculous to try to connect his decline to his steroid use when there's a clear and obvious line between his performance pre-injury and post-injury.

I honestly don't think it would be a bad idea for the reasons you mentioned.

He doesn't get crazy like that anymore since he stopped taking the steroids. Of course, he doesn't actually make any plays to get excited about either! :laugh2:

I seem to recall AdamJt13 destroying the Merriman > Ware argument back then with a write up of the number of times each player dropped into coverage, rushed the QB, etc......and Ware's numbers were superior to Merrimans' in every way except for total sack #s. He then went on to show how defenses were more often than not double teaming Ware, whereas many teams were often leaving Merriman to be picked up by single OLineman and TE's, if not by RB's....which greatly helped his sack totals. It seems that offensive coordinators had a great deal of respect for Ware. Not so much Merriman.

I still think Merriman can play, but he's not even in the same discussion with Ware. He'd be a backup on this team.

He will end up going to the Patriots and be a monster then 4 years from now they will trade him for two #1 picks and draft two future All-Pro's. It's the way it works for the Patriots.

Scott Pioli works in KC now... don't see that draft magic happening for them much anymore

20 sacks in 18 games sounds pretty damn good. I didn't realize he did that well after the suspension.
