Another McNabb trade wrinkle
It is hard to know what to believe these days with the Donovan McNabb trade rumors, but here is an interesting sidelight that does not exactly involve McNabb, but does involve one of the teams reported to be in hot pursuit.

Michael Lombardi reports in his Sunday column for the National Football Post that the Oakland Raiders are discussing the availability of quarterback Sage Rosenfels with the Minnesota Vikings. Lombardi writes that the Vikings would only trade Rosenfels if they knew for sure that Brett Favre is returning.

Of course, the Vikings have not really given Favre a timetable and say they have no idea what he will do. Most league observers think he will return.

Rosenfels was acquired from Houston before last season and had a chance to compete with Tavaris Jackson for the starting job until Favre came to Minnesota. Rosenfels was the third quarterback the entire season.

By the way, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that there have been no indications of talks between the Eagles and Vikings about McNabb.

And the Oakland Tribune has maintained no one in the Raiders organization has said there have been talks with the Eagles. Other reports say there have been.

Could the Raiders be interested in Rosenfels as a backup plan in case they can't land McNabb? Rosenfels would certainly be a much cheaper -- and much, much less accomplished -- alternative. Could acquiring Rosenfels be another QB to battle for the starting job and provide some insurance should JaMarcus Russell continue to struggle, but also represent Oakland's intention not to give up on him completely yet? Obviously, the Raiders would not be getting McNabb to be Russell's -- or Bruce Gradkowski's -- backup.

And the drama continues ...

shefter is almost always off.

He said we were in the process of trading for matt cassell in august of 08 and that the patriots were either going to trade him or release him because they loved the other kid they drafted.......

Nobody knows anything about all this mcnabb stuff. Only andy reid does and he certainly is not going to give up anything.

I read they actually want Mcnabb and Samuel for Aso.

If I'm philly I'd jump all over Mcnabb for Aso. But I wouldnt throw in Samuel either.

That defeats the purpose. If your strengthening your secondary, it makes no sense to trade your best DB. It'd make more sense to trade Sheldon Brown, or a draft pick and keep Samuel and Aso.

since its clear senility has walking dead man firmly in its grasp, Jerruh ought to be on the phone with his old friend right now wheeling and dealing, Trade spears for Seymour and Scandrick for Asomugha. He can tell Davis he is getting younger and cheaper players and ol Al would probably jump for it.

I don't think it's lopsided if it's Samuel/McNabb though that's a lot of dough floating around.

If Raiders do this, they are stupid. It would also not be a surprise to anyone at the same time as that would simply be following the status quo.

The Eagirls if true would be committing a highway robbery... I'm not saying McNabb is a bad QB but look at that pathetic offense in Oakland, he won't be able to shine. I'm sure McNabb won't approve that trade.

That trade is supposedly McNabb+Samuel for Aso.

This would seem to make more sense to me. i can't imagine even the Raiders being stupid enough to trade Aso straight up for McNabb.

1. What does this mean for the cowboys? The eagles would have a crazy secondary... Well their corners at least. Well Asomugha was torn to shreds by Austin and Samuels loves to bite on Austin's double move so I wouldn't be that worried.
2. Why would Davis trade for a player who requested to not be sent to his team and one other out of all the teams in the league? It has been made known that the Raiders don't really care if McNabb wants to sign an extension with them or not. So I don't think that's really in Davis's mind at this point, who knows what's going on in that messed up ole head of his.
3. I know that Davis wanted to unload Asomugha because of his contract but would he really trade him straight up for McNabb? Or would the Eagles have to send them some kind of pick as well? I think if anyone is gonna throw in a draft pick it would have to be the Raiders. I think the Eagles are wanting at lease some sort of draft pick for McNabb.
4. If McNabb blocks this trade by refusing to resign with the raiders is there a chance we could make some sort of trade for Asomugha involving Newman? There is no way we would trade one overpriced CB for another. Newman is likely not going anywhere because the Boys are happy with their three talented CBs and won't get rid of him until they have a suitable replacement.
5. Do you think Asomugha will restructure to be an Eagle? I think as long as he gets paid he'd be more than happy to go to a better team.
6. Do you think he would restructure to be a Cowboy? See above response

Really....the NFL needs to check on Al Davis to see if he is really fit to run the Raiders.
