How close it did is a matter of opinion. Fact is, the moment came shortly after lawyers from both sides were brought back into the process at an undisclosed location in the Washington, D.C., area. As tensions rose and anger grew, two sources said NFLPA leader DeMaurice Smith instructed his lawyers to "stand down."

With the lawyers removed from the direct negotiations, the process was said to get back on track and to a good spot. The scenario is an example of just how tenuous these talks can be and how quickly they can be derailed.

oh my. Well lets see what our lawyers here have to say about this.

Kudos to Mr. Smith if that depiction is real then. It is the first thing he has done other than the 2 thumbs up that I consider noteworthy.

Why doesn't that surprise me? Glad Smith at least took charge and did the right thing finally.

They need to get this done soon. I want training camp.

Just put a shock collar on the lawyers

I want free agency.
We need a safety and we need DE's.
Get this thing done!!!

I'm almost positive that the mental image I have of it didn't actually happen.

All I can think of is a ridiculous Will Ferrell skit where D. Smith would be in Ferrell's role.

He has actually done a lot of good things. You just don't like the fact he represents the interests of the players. You have just wanted him to lay down so the owners could walk all over him.

You don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about as it pertains to me.

The University of Maryland commencement speech comes to mind.

That speech wasn't a good thing, unless I am missing your SARCASM. :p:

Sounds like they need to get better lawyers. That's ridiculous if true.

This is exactly what I said several times before. Progress started the moment the lawyers were removed and now that they are back, regression ensues almost immediately.

I cannot argue with this .. as I said before, it is quite possible the lawyers for both sides are more concerned with winning to improve their reputation than they are actually representing the best interests of their clients.

In many high profile cases like this, law firms that represent the winning side or the perceived winner tend to vault to the top of the list for future high profile (and costly) litigation cases.

It is possible that with different legal teams, especially ones without all of the vested time and self interests in the existing negotiations could work better to negotiate a mutually beneficial agreement between the two sides especially since it seems the clients themselves have been making progress on several key issues.
