NFL ahead of last year's season ticket sale pace

5/31/2011 8:50:47 AM

According to Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal, the NFL is ahead of the pace on season-ticket sales compared with this point last year, a counter-intuitive trend given the uncertainty of the league’s 2011 season with a lockout that has now stretched into its 12th week. Owners were briefed on the sales results last week at their spring meetings in Indianapolis.

what are scalpers banking on and are they buying a load for to make money off of? or am i wrong on this whole point?

Hmmmm....interesting. I'm a little surprised, if this is true, that the sales are up given that the people have no idea if there will even be a season or not.

I wouldn't be surprised, in the least, if you've got scalpers trying to take advantage of the possibility of making a lot of money off this when the lock out ends. I could see that happening.

People did that type of thing when XBox 360 and PS3 came out. They went out and reserved their 2 units, at multiple locations, and then held onto them until the holidays. Then they'd post on EBay, right before Christmas, about having brand new, unopened, 360's and PS3's and they'd let people bid on them.

The folks that did that made SERIOUS returns on their money. The 360's, in particular, I remember looking at on Ebay and just laughing at the moron parents who just HAD to get that for their kid for christmas. These folks, who bought them when they came out, and paid 300 a unit for them were getting anywhere from 1,000-5,000 (in most cases. Some a little less and some even more than that. I saw one person sell one for 8,000) per unit. That's some serious return on your investment. lol

This is the kind of stat which my little voice tells me could be terribly misleading. First of all, I think we have to throw away all the teams who always sell out and have waiting lists... Giants, Steelers, Bears, Patriots, Packers, Cowboys, Eagles, Ravens can't be doing any better this year than last year, right? At least not without adding some seats (don't get any ideas, Jerruh).

So the question is: Did the teams with crappy sales last year (Chargers, Jaguars, Lions, Buccaneers, 49ers) actually manage some sort of sales increase? Well I suppose anything is possible... I do remember reading there were some lower prices from some teams.

The ability for the scalpers to make money will depend on the actual consumer demand for going to the games if/when the season begins. I have a feeling that, despite the NFL's statements to the contrary, demand will be down a little. So I'm not sure I'd recommend selling the farm to invest in NFL tickets.

The interesting thing to me is who is reporting this. It is not the NFL. So this isn't really propaganda, but could they try and make it turn into that?

They may or may not be ahead of the pace in regards to season tickets, but if I don't see some definitive progress soon (mid to late July) I will be cancelling my subscription to Sunday Ticket. I refuse to pay $300+ with the current level of uncertainty.

Could be sales on new season ticket holders of outstanding seats available. Compared to what was available last year. And current or renenwed sales are not included in the pool. Just another way to manipulate stats. you can say what you want to your skewed point of view. And how you want them to be seen.

I already cancelled mine. I haven't used it that much in the past 3 years. Between having season tickets, and going out to watch most of the away games. And then without knowing about the season, the price is upped to what, $335 this year. It's not so much the money, as if I was not in the DFW area, or didn't go to the home games. I would gladly pay it.

I'm sure I'll miss it once the season starts, for the times I did watch it, or even the partial games at times. But why waste the money this year. However, I do plan to stay home more this year on the away games, so I may start it up again. To see all the other games, instead of the boring options on local TV. And I think they will offer me some special to start it again. I had it since 1997.
