I can't decide what to call my weekly game thread yet so I'm changing it each week for now. Since I was on a boat in choppy water during the game, this week it's Shockwave!
It's late in the week and the game has been broken down every which way already, so I'm going a different route. I'm going to talk about the fans and the joys of watching a game on the road.
It was Sunday 11am in Port Canaveral, FL when we arrived at the park and ride lot near our ship, my entire family in our gear. The car that pulled up behind us had a beautiful blue star on it's front plate and the wife and kids all jumped out in Cowboy's jersey's. My 7 year old went up and high fived the woman right away since she had on a Witten jersey like him. We made new friends right away and talked about the upcoming game. My 9 year old looked up at me with a smile and said, "being a Cowboy fan is cool Dad"; great way to start the day!
We jumped on the shuttle and the family in the back all cheered when they saw our jersey's, they were from Dallas. The father proudly introduced me to his son, named Dallas, lol! We shared great stories of how we became fans on the way to the ship and had a great time, my 7 year old asked if everyone in the world were Cowboy's fans. I told him no but they should be!
As we left the shuttle one of the bag handlers ran over from the next shuttle to shake my kids hands and tell them they had good taste in clothes, lol. He told them he's been a fan for 53 years and counting and thanked me for bringing my kids up right.
As we boarded the ship, we ran into countless people in Cowboy's gear, at least 3 times as many as any other team. We exchanged high fives, knuckle bumps, tipped hats and knowing glances from across the ship. My kids seemed to stand a little taller with each new friend met.
I ended up sitting next to a guy from Detroit on the lido deck during the first half. We also had some great conversation. He was really happy to finally have a team he could believe in, even though they were getting killed. We both agreed they are a second half team and the game was far from over, CRAP!
I'll leave the rest of the game out, next day...People were still wearing Cowboy's shirts, hats and other gear. We all shared acknowledging glances and sighs. But everyone still had a good outlook, "we'll get it fixed in the bye", "Garrett's got them on the right track", "Ryan will knock more fight into them!" and so on. There was hope in the air, even though we all knew there are still things to be fixed.
We bumped into to more fans from other ships while visiting different islands, more smiles, more How Bout Them Cowboys, nice hat and the like. Home away from home!
It made me realize how lucky I am to be a fan of the greatest franchise in sports. I have now made new friends and shared stories of the Cowboys in 9 countries I think and God knows how many cities, truly awesome!
The way the game ended sucked, but I'm dying to put my gear on and go through the drama all over again, hopefully with the right result this time. Even better is my colleague from our Boston office will be here in Orlando for the game; it's on!
So keep the faith, we're 2-2 and were in all 4 games. There is a lot left to fix but a few tweaks fixes a lot. Austin, Dez, Hatch and Scandrick should be back at close to 100% after the bye. We should be getting Carter back soon, Romo will be much healthier and Murray will be a little more ready to contribute.
