I hate where the Cowboys are right now. We are really bad, and at face value, it doesn’t seem things’ll be getting better any time soon.
I wanted to find SOME sort of clarity, so I listed out a positional breakdown of the organization, and offered a graded outlook on how I view each group in the next 1-2 year window.
QB
There are obviously tons of different thoughts here, but it looks as if Dak will be our QB moving forward. Will he be making $40million/yr? We’ll see. His salary will affect roster flexibility, but it is what it is. I’ll take a wait-and-see approach here.
QB Outlook: B+
RB
Zeke has his defenders. But seriously, is anybody truly happy/satisfied with his production? He and Pollard offer a contrasting style, which in theory is good. But for the position, Zeke is making entirely too much money. If we can form some semblance of a respectable offensive line, Zeke can still be effective. We’re stuck with him as our RB for at least the next couple years. I hope they can find someone in the mid-rounds soon though.
RB Outlook: C+
WR/TE
This is the group that offers the most hope for the future. Not only in production, but possible trade capital as well (Cooper or Gallup). Lamb had an off day today, but that kid is lightning in a bottle. Gallup is really solid when he has a competent QB throwing to him. I’m not high on Cooper’s attitude/demeanor, but the guy is still top-10 in the league. And at tight end, Jarwin was really going strong until he went down, and Schultz has been better than I could have ever hoped for. We may be set there for years to come!
WR/TE Outlook: A
OL
Scared! Tyron is on his last leg; will he pull a Frederick and retire? Is lazy Collins just gonna keep coasting after getting fat and happy after that contract? Connor Williams hasn’t been mentioned much this year, and that’s an improvement. Martin is still a beast, but moving forward, he has no established help around him. Steele and Knight have had their moments, but are they good enough to commit our future to them? Biadasz seems solid! But other than that, what do we have? For as OLine rich as we used to be, I have no idea how they’re going to fix this in the next year or two.
OL Outlook: D-
DL
Cowboys placed their faith in FA signings of established veterans, and they’ve all but been invisible. With the hopeful exception of Aldon, none of the 2020 FA DL signings will be here in 2021. Crawford is gone also. Lawrence has finally decided to make cameo appearances the last few weeks, but he’s still a drastic overpay and I’m sick of his empty talk. We do have a couple young, potential nice pieces moving forward but overall, DL needs major investment to get better.
DL Outlook: F
LB
Can we just cut every one of them? Lee is going to retire. Jaylon is one of the two worst contract extensions of the last decade, and we’ll be forced to endure his incompetence for another year or two. I really would like to see what we have in Bernard. LVE looked aggressive today, but will his body hold up? LB is another group that needs major attention for improvement.
LB Outlook: D
DB
I actually do think we have talented corners. Of all defensive position groups, I think a scheme change could benefit them the most. Diggs and Lewis are best playing close to the WR and being physical. Awuzie sucks, but he’ll be here at least for 2020..... Safeties though! We better have a complete overhaul here. Not one of our safeties have legitimate starting NFL talent. Maybe a couple could stay on as backups/special teamers, but we better not have this same group in 2021. Enough is enough.
DB Outlook: C-
Special Teams
Zuerlein has steadied himself. He’s an upper-tier kicker. Ladouceur may retire, and that dude is very undervalued IMO. And I swear, if Chris Jones is still our punter in 2021, Lord help me. Also, Pollard (despite his good return today) offers next to nothing in kickoff returns. I like Lamb with punts though.
Special Teams Outlook: C+
Coaching
McCarthy will be here in 2021. We can all wish he’d be fired, but he won’t. Nolan is as good as gone, and Moore will probably get another pass since Dak went down. I think the best we can hope for is that McCarthy hires a defensive mind that’s not a retread and can actually bring something to the table. It just really scares me that McCarthy seems to have lost the team not even halfway in to his first year with the team. It’s very alarming.

OVERALL, we have too many holes to fill here. Unless Lady Luck favors us and we go on an auspicious run, this team isn’t going to be good enough to make any noise. The Jones’ are great at filling the fan base with pipe dreams and hollow hope, but I’m not falling for it anymore. Our window of potential has closed, and we’re in need of a rebuild. It won’t happen, though. So we will continue this exhausting cycle of trying to patch the holes and hope for the best. Ahhh, the roller coaster ride that is being a Dallas Cowboys fan.
