Should coaches treat players differently?

I can't help but like Todd Lowber. This kid is the anit-Bennett. He cares SO much about making the team, that it works against him. Still, like Garrett's dad said on Hard Knocks, you can't coach athletism like his. Mr. Garrett feels like the Cowboys' coaches should be trying to work with Lowber more, instead of turning their backs on him or yelling at him.

I tend to agree. I know you shouldn't coddle players, but you have to work with different people different ways. Lowber, for instance, kicks himself enough for everyone, so why kick him again? Bennett doesn't care, so you have to do what you have to, to show him it IS important. Lowber is the type that needs a pat on the back for doing well, and a "we'll get 'em again next time", when he fails. A player like Lowber, who has played so little football, but has so much talent, needs to be brought along slowly.

If you think about it, at 6-3, 205, & elite speed, he's closer to Owens' level than any of our receivers. I know Austin is a little bigger, but he's had 2 yrs. to show what he can do, and I don't think he has Lowber's speed.

I would love to see him do well these next few weeks, and at least get a shot at the practice squad. I don't think he'll pass through waivers. There are too many teams out there looking for an athlete of his magnitude.

Everyone keeps saying he is an elite athlete. But I have never heard of him or seen any stats to back up that statement. And when I watched him on HardKnocks, he ran poor routes and dropped most of the passes thrown to him. He must be hidding his gifted ability well.....so well, he may not make the team or practice squad.

Again, let me see him play in a few games before I make my own conclusions. It bothers me when people watch a TV program (that's edited) and make their judgements from that.

WATCH THE GAMES YOURSELF. I don't care what I saw with Bennett, what I saw with Lowber, or anyone else, I'll wait to see it on the field before I start to worry.

No team is going to claim Lowber and put him on their 53 man roster.

Dallas is bringing him along slowly. Him eventually being put on the PS will be part of that. There is no need to rush him onto the roster for this season. Lowber being put on the roster this year would not help the team nor would it help Lowber, either. Hard Knocks does not show every thing. We don't know if coaches only yell at him the whole time. I am sure they are nice to him as well.

I am sure they yell at the other receivers, too. I saw John Garrett yelling at Witten in the episode last night.

Stanback also has size and elite speed.

Lowber will be on the Dallas PS after final cuts. That is if after he clears waivers he wants to stay in Dallas. I suppose he could seek out another teams practice squad, but I bet he stays with Dallas.

He is going to be released. Maybe can get onto the practice squad. Hard Knocks is doing a good job of making you feel sorry for him. And at the same time probably making Bennett look worse than he really is.

Anybody could've signed him off the Giants practice squad all last year, but didn't. Then we signed him off the street this offseason.

He may be a nice guy, but Todd Lowbers are everywhere.

And frankly, with the exception of Jason, something about the Garretts is borderline creepy, IMO.:

I don't think there are a lot of guys like this kid. It's rare to get that much speed and quickness in someone his size. He's faster than Austin and Stanback. He's another Alexander Wright at this point in time. Whether or not he can play WR is just unknown. But he can frackin fly. He's still PS bound. I don't see how he can contribute this year although I'd love to be wrong about this kid.

I don't know that I ever see Lowber as a good WR in the NFL. When I look at this kid, I see somebody who, with some work, might turn into a heck of a good Special Teams player. If he can learn to be proficiant with the ball, he could probably be a pretty good return man. If he worked on his tackling, learned to be a bit more physical, he could probably be one hell of a gunner. This is where I see him making a team. Not at WR but that's just my opinion.

He is 26 years old, with only one year of football (training camps and practice squads over past year). So he needs to learn very fast to have a chance. If it takes him 3 years to get there like a lot of players then he will be 29 and trying to start....not good.

He reminds me of the retread baseball players we tried to make into QB's. Football was not his first sport or the one he loved....

All I know is that he is already on his third NFL team. He has not made enough of an impression with the first two to stick around in any capacity. I like his physical talents, but it takes a lot more than that to play in the NFL even on special teams. I can see Dallas keeping him on the PS this season to see if he does develop into something. That is the most we can expect out of him this season and he may be lucky to even get that.

I know exactly what you're talking about. The TE coach seems a bit like a serial killer and Pops... well, he just looks already dead.

I concur Josee. Heck, if he could somehow develop into a good special teams contributor, I'd consider ourselves very lucky. I just don't see any way he could turn into an accomplished NFL WR at this stage of the game. Just too much to over come where that is concerned. JMO of course.

I think he should consider the CFL and get some playing time.

As far as the PS is concerned, I guess it wouldn't hurt to have him on it, but personally, I think I'd rather have someone else in his place, someone closer to contributing.

I don't see anything creepy about the Garrett family. Don't forget that their dad was a coach in the NFL but also a scout most of his life, a lot of it with the Dallas Cowboys. Just like Wade's father brought him into the family so to speak, which is same thing Wade is doing with his son West, that's exactly what Garrett's father did with his sons. First of all he probably spent a lot of time away from the family and whenever he was home he naturally spent a lot of time with his children, particularly his sons who be probably bonded better with because of football then he did with his daughters. Sounds to me like Dad Garrett did a darned good job of raising all his children--although I'm inclined to think that Mom Garrett was much more responsible for those children's development then was Dad Garrett.

The fact he's here and has been elsewhere after not basically playing organized FB is a testament to his freakish talents. Not many guys step onto a professional football field with his background. He's not only freaky fast but he's actually very fluid and appears controlled. Watch him and compare that to Austin. I think he can learn to catch the ball. He cuts well enough to learn routes. He needs a lot of coaching to catch up. I think he can be. It's a big ole hill though. I think he's a basketball player and not baseball but I'm not certain.

Not this year but if he could play STs and perhaps run kicks back then he could possibly play for someone. I just don't see it this year.

Agreed. I think Bennett seems to be a bit of a turd, but I think you're spot-on in saying that these situations are being over-dramatized. Just look at Lattimore in episode one.

I agree about there being a bunch of Todd Lowbers everywhere. And it holds true at every position.

There's no doubting the guy is a physical specimen. But can he use that size and speed to get out of jams at the line of scrimmage, run precise routes, run fast in pads, catch the ball, etc. Yeah, yeah -- give him a chance. Well, he has that chance in practice, and he'll probably get on the field this weekend. But even if he has an amazing catch, do you really keep him because of that? These coaches have enough film of him in practice, I would imagine, to have an idea of whether or not he has (or can develop) all the finer nuances. I mean, you're not going to suddenly have all the answers by playing him 10 snaps this weekend.
