Should Dallas do this, too?

Two questions:

1. Should Garrett also implement this policy with our players?

2. If this becomes typical for teams, should the NFL change the rules so that guys will still try to make these plays?

In my opinion, not trying to stretch for pylons and the goal line will make the game less exciting.

I like it unless it's 4th down. Secure the dang ball. Worst case scenario (other than fumbling and costing the team points) is you end up with the ball on the 1 or 2 and have another chance to either get a TD or a FG.

1. No

2. No

I'm about ready to tell the receivers to stop reaching out for first downs unless it's 3rd down or time is running out. This costs teams routinely because the ground jars the bar loose often.

The Carr play isn't as common, although the punishment is 10-fold. An incompletion is frustrating, but a turnover is quite something else.

Have a hard time seeing Bill benching Gronk if he did that.
Yep. Last play of Super Bowl, only way to make a play is to stretch out the ball. Gronk leaves it tucked in, Patsies lose game. Belichick gets his wish. Players listen to him.

We always coached our players to extend the ball over the goalline, WITH BOTH HANDS!

I think the fact that the Carr play is not common is the logic against having a goal-line policy like the Pats do. How many times have we seen players reach for the pylon successfully compared to fumbles like Carr's? I would think the success percentage is very high.

I do recall Randle getting in trouble back in 15 for diving and extending the football over the goalline?

Wasn't that what got McFadden on the field, when Randle did that after Garrett told him not to?

The bogus "non-catch" calls at the the goal line seem to happen every other week, though. In that case, having a policy like this could save your season, if adhered to.

Imagine if Dez had simply been satisfied with going down at the 2 instead of trying to lunge vs. the Packers in 2014? There is absolutely no question that it was a catch followed by a football move (gathered himself and dove), but if this policy was in place and adhered too, we would have had the ball at the 2 with a chance to ice it. Obviously, hindsight is 20/20.

I also think a lot of times they do it it's actually unnecessary and they're trying to avoid any contact. Nut up, dip your shoulders, keep your legs moving and a lot of these guys would fall into the end zone even if they were tackled. Instead, they're out there titty bumping and hold the ball out like a little kid bringing a loaf of bread home to mamma just to avoid a little contact.

Leon Left stretched the ball out, or whatever he did, and it cost him a SB TD.
But he did it 5 yards before the goal line.

That is why you want mart players who know game situations so you dont have to make rules like that. Two hand reach seems fine to me. I hand, only on 3rd or 4th down and you need a TD to win.

I’m thinking the whole getting arrested killed randle

Tell the players to not go for the score, brilliant move
I don't think it's about not going for the score, it's about how to go for the score.

I could just hear the comments now if Zeke (or whoever) fumbled the ball at the goal line on 3rd and goal in the 4th quarter because he tried to hold the ball out instead of trying to make a move or run over the guy in front of him. Actually, Zeke could probably get away with it but if it was Twill, Dez or anyone else people would immediately be calling for them to get cut.
