Last year, the average gross punt was 44.1 yards for those who had more than 20 punt attempts with a net average of 37.6 yards. Do you think many coaches are going to live with an additional 10 yard loss in distance when field position plays such a vital role in the outcome of most games?
The only advantage hitting the scoreboard might give a team is the possibility of it hitting a receiving team member when it falls short. I say that can only increase the excitement of the game.
