Should the board be part of the playing field?

I apologize if this has been mentioned or suggested, but I think this do over business is for the birds.

The punters are going to learn very quickly that if you hit the board, the momentum of the ball is going to slow down exponentially. When Trapasso hit the board, his ball only traveled 27 yards from the line of scrimmage in the air. The only time an average like that might benefit a team is when they are on the opponent's 45 yl or closer.

Last year, the average gross punt was 44.1 yards for those who had more than 20 punt attempts with a net average of 37.6 yards. Do you think many coaches are going to live with an additional 10 yard loss in distance when field position plays such a vital role in the outcome of most games?

The only advantage hitting the scoreboard might give a team is the possibility of it hitting a receiving team member when it falls short. I say that can only increase the excitement of the game.

13 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, not 27. :)

I disagree. The videoboard should not be considered as part of the field since it exists above it.

Making it a part of the field would also apply to everything else which exists above NFL fields, like guide wires for overhead cameras. The current no-penalty rule is more than necessary in making punts which impact the videoboard a complete non-issue.

Nice graphics.
Actually it was 27 gross yards. I was talking about the total distance the punter would have been credited on the punt. (Ten 36 to Dal 37...14 + 13)
I think you thought I meant it only traveled 27 yards before it hit the scoreboard.

So from your graphics, you can definitely see that the downward trajectory was half the horizontal distance that the upward horizontal distance.

You say 27. I say 24. You say tomato. I say tomauto...

You stated from the line of scrimmage, not gross yards, but if that's what you really meant, it's cool. :)
