Should the Cowboys add at Running Back?

With the band back together, the Cowboys offense should once again be one of the better units in the league in 2026. That doesn’t mean they should be complacent though. There are some areas they can still stand to improve upon, such as running back behind Javonte Williams.

As things stand right now, the Cowboys have Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue, and Phil Mafah competing with one another to fill out the depth chart behind Javonte Williams. Out of the three Blue is the most intriguing and has the most upside, but none of them really inspires much confidence if something were to happen to Williams.

Despite having a career year, No. 33 started to wear down towards the end of the season last year. To help keep him as fresh as possible throughout the season and for a potential push into the playoffs, Dallas would be wise to upgrade the depth behind him.
I don’t know, she Jerry stepped down as GM? Lol.

I hope you're joking cause if not... I'm sorry man, but that's a horrible take. You can't look at the best RBs from recent history and tell me they aren't game changers. Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor are simply awesome players and they aren't alone.

how many are there? 60? 30? how many? do you think you are goign to land one? do you think one will fall from Heaven jsut for the Cowboys?

After the Jets signed Breece Hall to 45 million 29 of it guaranteed it looks like a bargain in bringing Williams back . Remember the only game Malik Davis started last year he went off for a 100 yards against Wash and then Blue the following week had 70 in one half against the Giants .

Then you have Mafah in the bullpen warming up and he’s probably a good back up plan . I could see why they skipped over RB in the draft let’s see what camp looks like .
He was 16/64 for the game, must've lost yards on most carries after the half.

What part of giving them a fair chance of proving themselves before bringing in someone who's unlikely to be any better strained the reading comprehension skills?
Mafah
Blue
Davis
Abinikanda
That's more than enough for a competition without stretching out snaps beyond what a reasonable evaluation can be made!
Whoa there, hossie. You really lack any sort of comprehension skills. Might want to take a reading class or something.

So, Mr. Comprehension Boy, explain to me how they're not getting a fair chance if their competing against others. I mean, you must really think they suck to think we can't bring anyone else in. You make it sound like they suck.

Cowboys should be good to go with the current 4: Williams, Blue, Davis and Mafah.

Williams: starter who can pound it inside and is able to break some runs outside the Tackles. Can wear down due to his aggressive pounding type of running, but Javonte Williams definitely is a gamer.

Blue: pure speed, quickness running the ball but also can run in between the Tackles. Not the pounder Williams is, but Blue can run between the Tackles when necessary. Blue has a dual threat to him since he was a good threat in the passing game when in college. Needs to keep improving on his pass protection as he did last year in 2025. Schotty needs to get Jaydon Blue much more involved, but be careful with the amount of hits he receives.

Davis: very similar to Javonte Williams but not as much of a pounder. Malik Davis is a poor man's version of Javonte Williams but very raw and limited. A career backup who showed some spring to his game last season when given some reps.

Mafah: bigger bodied RB similar in style to Javonte Williams. 6'0", 235 lb RB who can consistently pound it in between the Tackles, is tough to bring down at times, but he has enough wiggle to his running style where he can break some runs for some big yards. Phil Mafah can run both inside and outside, but his size and slightly slower speed dictate he is best used inside, especially in short yardage. Could improve on his pass protection.

I think the Cowboys will be fine with these current 4 RBs. 3 of them are more power types of RBs, while Blue is the only true speedster. If the Cowboys need some more speed (in case Blue gets injured), Cowboys can always use KaVontae Turpin in the passing game and even on a handful of runs if needed.

The Commanders took a guy late I was hoping Dallas might . Kaytron Allen will run over poeole make a good alternative to the smaller speed backs they have .

I don't think you truly "show" at camp. I do get these are pro coaches and can see things. And that players DO need to show what they can do in mock up practices. But...nothing like real games.

This is why i HATED Jerry playing starters in our last game. For what? Give them stats to justify salaries or player standings? (not "picking on" dak...but he got a "start" and maybe a few extras yards and such). NooOOoo. give these other guys a chance to play in real games.

And yes....there is a window to snatch freed-up players of value. Other teams have pro assessment too...if someone of value is available early on...they are gonna take them. If we wait too long while evaluating our guys (we like our guys!)...well...we're stuck.

You;re saying we DON'T know what mafa or blue can really do....until THIS camp. That's crazy! Incompetant even.
I do agree with most of what you are saying. We know how this FO usually functions and once they have bodies they think they are done. I think mafa played in 1 preseason game, he looked good but need to see more. Blue was a healthy scratch mostly and probably didn't have enough touches to show what he could do. Both need more opportunities. The nature of running backs is they need carries to get in a rhythm.

It’s just one of those things I believe. I think he overachieved last year and I expect him to regress to his level.

Injuries are also going to be a concern for another year.
I don't know about the regress to his level part, but he did seem to wear down later in the season. Bell cow backs take a beating. Bringing in a proven back to lighten the load would be wise.
The "others" on the roster with the exception of Davis are ??.

Yeah, last season was his level. This is close to how he was playing as a rook, albeit a bit hesitant at times. I was surprised to see the "regress to his level" thing, as it really didn't make sense.
