With the band back together, the Cowboys offense should once again be one of the better units in the league in 2026. That doesn’t mean they should be complacent though. There are some areas they can still stand to improve upon, such as running back behind Javonte Williams.

As things stand right now, the Cowboys have Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue, and Phil Mafah competing with one another to fill out the depth chart behind Javonte Williams. Out of the three Blue is the most intriguing and has the most upside, but none of them really inspires much confidence if something were to happen to Williams.

Despite having a career year, No. 33 started to wear down towards the end of the season last year. To help keep him as fresh as possible throughout the season and for a potential push into the playoffs, Dallas would be wise to upgrade the depth behind him.

That brings us to current Arizona Cardinals RB Trey Benson. Benson was a third-round pick (66th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft. So far this offseason Arizona has signed Tyler Allgeier, re-signed James Conner, and drafted Jeremiyah Love third overall to upgrade the RB position. That doesn’t bode well for Trey Benson.

To date, Benson lack of production doesn’t exactly scream “trade for me”, but his untapped potential does. The 6’0”, 220-pound RB with 4.39 speed could be of interest to several teams around the league, particularly the Cowboys.

Benson already has ties to the Cowboys via Klayton Adams, Arizona’s former OL coach, now Dallas’ offensive coordinator. Adams was with the Cardinals when they selected Benson 66th overall a couple years ago and could advocate a reunion could be in the best interest of all parties concerned.

Yeah, two Day 3 RBs from last year's draft and some undrafted guys are not a whole lot to inspire a ton of hope. Malik looked pretty good — and much improved from what I've seen from him in previous years — but he's getting up there in age. Blue has some electricity to his game but I'm not sure he's a viable long-term answer if Javonte should go down for an extended period of time. The one I'm most hopeful about is Mafah. I love a bruiser. Hopefully, he's got all 4 wheels on the ground this year after spending most of last season on IR. By the way, I'm still not convinced they weren't just stashing him.

All that said, they should be looking around on a weekly basis for different options to have in the room. I would've liked for them to have addressed the position in the draft, perhaps in lieu of taking the project OT.

Good take, sir! Benson absolutely seems like someone for them to keep an eye on!

Cardinals will need to cut a back.

Bigger back, I'd be fine with that, bye Blue!!

Williams goes down that's it!!!

It is one of the areas that concerns me. We don't know what we have behind Javonte, so essentially we're depending on him staying healthy and not needing much relief, or we're just blindly hoping that someone steps up.

I do believe you left out Israel Abanikanda, but there's even less reason to hope there. He's on his fourth team since being drafted in the fifth round in 2023 and has averaged 3.2 yards per carry on the few carries he's had.

I don't know if hoping that Blue or Mafah will turn out to be any better is wise. Frankly, I was hoping that we would add Arkansas RB Mike Washington Jr. to the mix in the fourth round. I would have preferred him over the OL Shelton. Not that drafting Washington would have necessarily fixed the position, but it would at least improve the chances some.

One guy that's already here that I am interested in at RB is Israel Abanikanda. He has a good mix of size and speed but was stuck in crowded RB rooms everywhere he's been and never got that many opportunities.

Maybe he can be a good RB 3 if he can play special teams.

We could do worse than Malik Davis as a backup.

Hes not splashy. Hes not big. Hes not a guy who will take it to the house.

He just comes in every year, competes. Plays special teams. Gets 4 when you need 3. Blocks. Knows the playbook.

Teams need football players as much as they do super stars.

Not until they decide to move on from one of the current guys. We need to get the young guys reps but if they fail to step up then absolutely bring in someone else. Get with the program or get out.

Williams will be a bell cow again. I think we are fine if he stays healthy. We could however be in trouble if he gets hurt. Are we confident he will stay healthy?

Who did you have in mind?

I don’t expect Williams to have the same year but I’m not sure there’s anything to about it at this point.
