Should the Cowboys add at Running Back?

We could do worse than Malik Davis as a backup.

Hes not splashy. Hes not big. Hes not a guy who will take it to the house.

He just comes in every year, competes. Plays special teams. Gets 4 when you need 3. Blocks. Knows the playbook.

Teams need football players as much as they do super stars.
The Cowboys generally scout their RBs well, after all no one besides them saw Rico Dowdle being a serial, 1,000 yard rusher when he was spot starting like Malik has been.

That brings us to current Arizona Cardinals RB Trey Benson. Benson was a third-round pick (66th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft. So far this offseason Arizona has signed Tyler Allgeier, re-signed James Conner, and drafted Jeremiyah Love third overall to upgrade the RB position. That doesn’t bode well for Trey Benson.

To date, Benson lack of production doesn’t exactly scream “trade for me”, but his untapped potential does. The 6’0”, 220-pound RB with 4.39 speed could be of interest to several teams around the league, particularly the Cowboys.

Benson already has ties to the Cowboys via Klayton Adams, Arizona’s former OL coach, now Dallas’ offensive coordinator. Adams was with the Cardinals when they selected Benson 66th overall a couple years ago and could advocate a reunion could be in the best interest of all parties concerned.
This is the way....Zona has been a disaster and likely has ruined the kid. You can't count on Conner being able to stay on the field, but either way, he is RB3 at best...I worry about Javonte staying healthy and very much not confident in us having a capable RB2 on the roster if he does

RBs are "get yards" now a days, i dont expect them to "take it to the house" unless its short.

Pick up a few young guys. no need to invest in it that much.

I hope you're joking cause if not... I'm sorry man, but that's a horrible take. You can't look at the best RBs from recent history and tell me they aren't game changers. Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor are simply awesome players and they aren't alone.

Walker was MVP of the super bowl, and deservedly so

Williams will be a bell cow again. I think we are fine if he stays healthy. We could however be in trouble if he gets hurt. Are we confident he will stay healthy?
The FO probably thinks so.

After the Jets signed Breece Hall to 45 million 29 of it guaranteed it looks like a bargain in bringing Williams back . Remember the only game Malik Davis started last year he went off for a 100 yards against Wash and then Blue the following week had 70 in one half against the Giants .

Then you have Mafah in the bullpen warming up and he’s probably a good back up plan . I could see why they skipped over RB in the draft let’s see what camp looks like .

With the band back together, the Cowboys offense should once again be one of the better units in the league in 2026. That doesn’t mean they should be complacent though. There are some areas they can still stand to improve upon, such as running back behind Javonte Williams.

As things stand right now, the Cowboys have Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue, and Phil Mafah competing with one another to fill out the depth chart behind Javonte Williams. Out of the three Blue is the most intriguing and has the most upside, but none of them really inspires much confidence if something were to happen to Williams.

Despite having a career year, No. 33 started to wear down towards the end of the season last year. To help keep him as fresh as possible throughout the season and for a potential push into the playoffs, Dallas would be wise to upgrade the depth behind him.
Hmmm... why don't we see what we've got and give Mafah and Blue an actual chance to prove themselves before we go looking for someone else who's unlikely to actually be any better?

We don't need another back, we need to throw the ball to Jaydon Blue, we threw it to him 1 time last season..... 1 time! That's crazy when he is a legit threat in the passing game. Schotty did a good job with the offense, so I'm not hating but we have to find a way to throw the ball to Jaydon Blue... pretty simple

We don’t know how Blue and Mafah have progressed physically and mentally since last year. The coaches do so if they think they need more depth then they’ll get it based on how the GM has been listening more to his coaches than in the past finally. I watched Blue at Texas and he had some really good stretches. Time for Mafah and BLue to man up.

No, go into camp with what we have and see. Give lots of snaps to Blue and Mafah. Keep Williams and Davis sharp with strategic snaps and situations.

Or, act like we are an NFL franchise and bring in competition and let the chips fall where they may. Giving a player a position just because is not how you do it in the NFL. If you want to win.

And that will be our answer. If he ends up cut, we will know what Clayton thought of him.

Not until they decide to move on from one of the current guys. We need to get the young guys reps but if they fail to step up then absolutely bring in someone else. Get with the program or get out.
We probably can't wait to see. Anybody worth anything would already be gone. We'll need to be proactive or suffer the consequences.

I would call our RB situation ‘adequate’ at best
Lose Williams to an injury for 2 games and there is no one to fill in

Not really. There is plenty of time. It's not like a top RB is waiting for a job at home. Davis has proven he can sub in for a starter if need be. Blue is the biggest question mark I believe, so unless there is clearly a better speed option sitting at home there is no real reason to sign someone today. They need to work mafa and blue hard this camp. See what they can do then make a decision.

Disagree a little. Bring in some cheaper guys for backup and whomever outplays the others should get the spot.

I really don't understand people just wanting to give the spot to someone. Why wouldn't you want competition?
