Should The Cowboys Draft A RB Late? If So, Then Who?

It depends. If they are sitting there with a reach in the 5th or 6th round and the BPA is a running back that they had a high draft grade on? They should look into it. This team is a Demarco injury away(happens very year anyway) from looking terrible at running back.

For instance, had they drafted Eddy Lacy last year they wouldn't have missed much of a beat when Murray went out for a few games. Not saying they should've drafted Lacy but that's a prime example where most would probably be upset with us drafting a running back but it would've worked last year.

That's why my stance is BPA. No matter what round. Every position can be upgraded on this team and that should be the main goal.

With all that being said, I haven't written off Dunbar and Randle yet.

Nice in depth post.

I personally want Andre Williams or a speedy Darren Sproles type (I don't watch much college ball so I can't really think of one)

I guess I want one extreme or the other to compliment Murray who is a jack of all trades type of back.

Andre would be the future and by the tape wouldn't mind him coming here at all. Love Murray but this guy can ball.

Of all the QBs i have watched I like Sankey the best.

I like his ability to find holes in traffic up the middle. I like his burst and acceleration to the line. I like his quickness that allows him to jump cut from gap to gap behind the line with ease. I like how he makes people miss. I like his hands. I like when he gets the ball in space. I like how he always is tackled falling forward. I like how he is able to use his vision to avoid hits and dictate when he delivers a blow. I like his consistency and effort down in and down out. I like his durability.

I do not like his ball security. I do not like his blocking as he does not engage but rather tries to cut.

I would take him with our third. I see him able to do all the things that Garrett wanted Jones and Dunbar be able to do. Pitches, sprints, tosses, screens, etc. He needs to get stronger and he needs to refine his technique when he isn't getting the ball. Randle is a prospect but he just looked so slow getting to the line. Dunbar I put with Matt Johnson as never able to stay healthy. Murray is in his contract year.

RB is a need for immediate depth and will always be a future need given the volatility of the position.

If he were bpa and it was late at somepoint in the 7th or maybe a trade up to the sixth, I'd take Storm Johnson, because Storm.

I really like Chris Sims. He won't go late but he is a perfect fit for the offense.

Pretty sure you mean Charles Sims played at Houston and WVU. Kid will be special but he is ranked 4-5 best rb in draft.

Apparently the Sankey videos from draftbreakdown won't load.

Here is another of what appears to be every good play he had in 2012. 2013 was similar but with more catches. Their QB was middling at best so Sankey was the bell cow both years.

Yes, of course we should. We have six picks in the seventh for crying out loud.

The new motto of late in the NFL is that you can find running backs late in the draft. The NFL has devalued the position, as evidence,no running backs where selected in the first round in 2013 for the first time in over 50 years. Teams are waiting until late in day three to find their backs. In recent years, Andre Ellington and Alfred Morris are examples of late round steals in the 6th round or later. As for the Cowboys, I don't believe they are out of the running back market just yet because they have DeMarco Murray and drafted Joseph Randle in the fifth round last year. Phillip Tanner is a free agent who won't be back and Lance Dunbar is coming back from a very serious knee injury. You also have to keep in mind that Murray is a free agent in 2015 and isn't the most durable of backs. The team very well could spend a mid-to late pick on a running back, despite the fact that Murray is coming off a career year.

This leads me to a player I fell in love with when watching my favorite school, Florida, lose to Georgia Southern. In that game, Georgia Southern threw only three passes all game, completing none, and still beat Florida 26-20 with the explosive play of wing back Jerick McKinnon. A Swiss army knife at Georgia Southern, Mckinnon played three different positions in school, including quarterback, and racked up 3899 yards rushing in four years to go along with 55 touchdowns. If you want to watch him in this game, here is the video below. I think you will come away impressed.

If I am drafting a running back late, I want him to have at least one special quality. Whether that be as a receiver, terrific speed or size, or just a great athlete in general. Other than Adrian Peterson, there may not be a better athlete playing the running back position in the entire country. I know that sounds like a crazy statement, but we will get to his physical attributes in a second to prove that. If you aren't familiar with spider-charts, (provided by mockdraftable.com), the chart below shows McKinnon's measurables at the NFL Combine compared to all other running backs since 1999. For example, McKinnon's bench press (32 reps) was in the 99th percentile of all running backs. Got it? Let's take a look:

I encourage you to read the rest of the scouting report on Jerick McKinnon here: http://all22breakdown.com/?p=954

Didn't Todd Mcshay mention him as his late round steal?
It was him or another small school back and he was really hyping him up. Sounds good to me. Definelty worth a shot

Good call on McKinnon.

No idea if they try to get him late, but I do think the kid will stick somewhere.

The answer to what? Being the backup to Demarco Murray? Sure. I don't see any of the cast of characters the team has on the roster as a long-term option. I also don't see it as a position that needs to be addressed this year or even in 2015, unless it's an obvious pick to make.

Murray is a free agent after the 2014 season and has been far from durable in his three seasons thus far. Unless Randall is a clear option at starter I could see it being a position to address. And especially in 2015 if Murray hits free agency. As we'll need a quality #2 option.

The price of RBs have gone down, but there is no way i'm giving Murray a long term deal based on his injury history. So if a quality back slips to the 4th or 5th that is the BPA i'd be all for it. But no sooner based on our current defensive depth chart.
