Should The Navy/Marines Begin A-10 Carrier Operations?

In Afghanistan the A 10 would be of more use but still not a lot. However, its better then choppers since it is a lot harder to bring down.

If they can do carrier Ops with E-2's they can launch an A-10. I dont think the Navy would go there. I think it is too old of a weapons system.
Besides why do you need the Navy? You got the Air Force baby!

And someone who knows absolutley nothing about it chimes in....

A-10 is a great weapon system. I would love to see them in a more CAS role as they can deliver a lot of punishment to the enemy.

With that said I think the ground forces, Army and Marines need some CAS arecraft. I wouldn't mind seeing something prop driven similar to an OV-10 Bronco or even something similar to the P-52. Something that can come in low and fast and hit with some punch, plus is cheaper to operate.

Well I am a private person but I just gotta pull your card on this one buddy.
I am a 2A571 in the U.S. Air Force. As of today I have been in for 12 glorious years. Serving people just like you...you're welcome.
I have worked on and around numerous aircraft in the inventory (primarily heavies..I dropped the J shred at 7 level) one of which was the A-10 when I was assigned to the 51st FW.
I know just a little bit about planes....just a little.

We have an airforce? where?

Some people really think the Air Force is part of the military....

Oh, well for delusions.

So Yeah Yeah I noticed you did not give your job title.

Wouldn't have to do with something like janitorial service, would it?

I have met more then a few stupid people in the military so just saying you were in it means nothing to me.

Me too..I work with em everyday.

I am a Crew Chief 2A571...Aircraft Mechanic..12 years active duty aircraft maintenance experience and counting on multiple airframes..Airframe & Powerplant license as well.
I worked Transient Alert/Crash Recovery and Phase Dock @ Osan AB on A-10's and 16's. I have also worked C-5's and C-130's. Launched, recovered and serviced Navy,Marine and Army birds(Transient Alert)..EA-6's F-18's P-2's, Blackhawks, C-12's.../Civilian..747's, MD-11's (Patriot Bird hollah!) , 757's, AN-124 (Russian, didnt service that)
In short...I know planes
An A-10 is a heavy slow old tank with wings..but they could launch it off a carrier.

As others have mentioned, the war we're fighting over there does not cater to the true strength of A-10's: Obliterating anything and everything in its wake. This is a very precision-based (read: politically correct) air-to-ground campaign. The F-18F's can handle it, apparently...although the F-14D's outperformed it in almost every facet IIRC.

EDIT: Here is the Flight Journal article from 2002:

As has been pointed out by people familiar with carriers, the A -10 would have to be completely rebuilt. Of course as usual you were not listening.
You work on them= but do you actually KNOW them? If you couldnot figure out the simple facts of carrier vs normal air operations that does not say much for you.
