Weight limits for the NFL?

What about height limits for the NBA?

How about speed limits on fastballs in the MLB?

The point is nobody should be discriminated against because of any physical trait's advantage in any sport. These guys are given a gift from God and they put it to use. Not to mention......I would be willing to bet the fattest lineman in the NFL is in better physical condition than 99% of us.

being fat is a gift from god?

there shouldn't be a weight limit, if they were going to do anything as previously said it should be meeting criteria on the bmi but not a weight limit

I'm not saying to be discriminatory. I'm saying to put a plan in place to make sure players aren't at risk for future health problems. I think the thread should be renamed to, "Should there be a BMI limit in the NFL?" I'm sure strength coaches have a specific body fat percentage they would LIKE to have their players at, but there are probably no rules from the league. There should be a certain BMI limit depending on position. Obviously you need to carry more weight around if you're an OL or DL, compared to a RB or WR.

The players have definitely gotten bigger, stronger, faster, etc as the decades have gone on. Maybe it would make sense for players to have to be at a certain body fat percentage to make sure their body weight is mostly muscle, and not fat so it doesn't put them at risk for disease and other health issues.
Agreed, and I bet that most of these 320 330 pound guys are well under 20, which is pretty healthy.

Just because a guy weighs over 300 doesn't mean he's some fat slob who needs 2 cranes to pull his *** outta bed.

O-lineman and D-lineman are athletic as hell for their size.

Just look at Andre Smith from Hard Knocks... dude has double d's, but he can shuffle his feet like a wide receiver.

This man is listed as 6-6 353, he's been as high as 370 or more. Does he look obese to you? I rest my case.

The guy in the Roy Williams jersey looks obese.

No. All that will do is put out an inferior product on the field. There's a reason they get that big. Because it makes them better players.

I'd take that bet. I seriously doubt any of them are below 20% body fat. Maybe a few, and even so they'd probably have to be chemically assisted.

Sorry mods this will probably be moved, but I had a question for you guys. Especially for players that play on the offensive and defensive line, do you think there should be a weight limit that the players are required to play at? I see these massive nose tackles at over 300 lbs that are clinically obese, and IMO it's not safe for the present and especially the future.

I can see how skill positions for example have to stay at a somewhat lean and healthy weight, but if you compare offensive lines in the 1960's to offensive lines today, there's probably around a 100 pound difference. I think this is an area where the NFL should investigate, to insure the safety of the players health wise for the present and the future. What do you guys think?

Most of these lineman are probably in better shape and condition than most on this board. Just beause they are big, doesn't mean they are not in good shape. If anything, they are better off. Because if not for football, some may be 500 pounds.

I agree somewhat, but the physical pounding that these players take on a year-to-year basis is ridiculous. They may be more athletic, but we don't take the pounding that they do. Body fat percentage is huge. All this talk about how players have grown so much and all; we're the same humans!! Obviously we've come a long way with training and nutrition, but there should still be a BMI limit on every position.

Plus let's see what sort of shape these guys are in when they're 40 or 50 or 60...

If they can't get their weight under control then you know where there health is headed.

...but I hate to break everyone's bubble.

They have a large component of muscle that is functional for the sport and position they play...

But to hold the body types of 330 lb + men as an ideal standard with no link to obesity is ludicrous. Many of these players are carrying extra that we would define as medically unnecessary.

Absolutely. The heart is more or less the same size for everyone. So to pump blood for all that weight and stress is not good for the body. You will wear down before your time.

I don't know. This is the first post I see today.
And I have to admit I just laughed out loud.
Not dumping on the post, it just made me laugh.
On the other hand, there have been some thoughtful and courteous responses.:)

Good thing you weren't because you of all posters could not seriously dump on someone else's post with those threads you start.

Word!
