Should we be concerned about Scandrick?

I've never really had a lot of faith in Scandrick.. Anytime he puts together a good string of games I just keep waiting for the floor to fall out from under him because it usually does. Last year he was stellar though.

With that said...

DB's are at a huge disadvantage in camp.

The WR's get too much space and the QB's have no pressure of getting hit.

So no, im not worried about Scandrick until I see him struggle in games.

Every TC I've ever followed involves WRs coming out of community college and being the next Jerry Rice for exactly this reason. You can't evaluate the secondary very well until they start hitting for real in a game.

Below average CB
Plays at slightly above average level for 2 years on a CB deprived team
Gets caught (completely coincidental ) using PEDs
Holds out and fans yell "just pay the guy he outplayed his contract"
Player Gets paid
Play drops back to below average
Fans run to defense of "team leader"

Where oh where hVe I heard this story before ?

No one could have seen it coming

Color me not surprised

Yeah, he was only rated as a top 10 CB last year, and didn't give up a TD all year when in primary coverage, but yeah, below average.

To answer the thread, no, I'm not terribly concerned. The other DBs seem to be playing well and it's early.

I would recommend educating yourself about what MDMA us and what it dies to your system before mouthing off

Also Molly often has other substances mixed with it

Scandrick was ranked 13th in the league in FootballOutsiders success rate in 2014, 11th in 2013, and 8th in 2012. He allowed 9.9 yards per reception last year and didn't allow a single touchdown.

And MDMA is not a performance enhancer (at least not in sports)

After renegotiating his contract this year, all of the feedback I've read about Scandrick in camp is that he is getticoverng burnt left and right. Then I come across this observation from today's practice:

Now on to the practice observations:

  • Tony Romo was fresh after his day off on Wednesday. Before Dez Bryant left with a hamstring strain, Romo and the receiver hooked for three touchdowns in tight red zone one-on-one work with all of them coming on Orlando Scandrick. After the third touchdown, Romo said, “Thanks for playing, 32.” In the compete period, Bryant beat cornerback Brandon Carr on a bullet throw from Romo to the back shoulder. In team and seven-on-seven drills Romo completed 14 of 18 passes and it marked the first practice he was not intercepted in camp.

This is getting a little discerning. I realize it was one-on-ones and the advantage goes to the WR, but it seems every time I read Scandrick's name this this training camp, it is always seems to be in a negative light. I hope he gets his act together before the season starts.
Nate Newton talked about this on TC yesterday and laughed when a questioned was asked about Scandrick and said "he just cant cover Beasley right now but he's covering everybody else" Think this is more about how much Beasley has improved stead of concern for Scandrick.

I'm perfectly aware of what it does and it's effects. It is not a performance enhancing drug and does not have any physiological effects to an athletes body that would be considered as such.

Whether it has other substances or not, he wasn't tested positive for those. There is no legitimate argument that his use of MDMA had a positive effect on his performance, most especially into the season after his suspension. Unless there is some sort of science that says depleted serotonin levils help athletes months after they have been depleted.

Romo and Dez can beat Revis/Sherman/Peterson especially in the redzone. They led the league and passing and receiving TD's respectively. Not concerned at this point. Oscan really gained my confidence in him last year. If Scan was shutting down everything we'd probably be losing it that our passing game sucks. Lol

but, average.

I'm not worried about Scandrick in the least. I worry about Lee, P/K return, RB and Claiborne in that order.

Scandrick has definitely looked a little sluggish. I would not get to high or low on a player at this point based on TC practices, but it is a small concern. Let's see how he looks in the preseason game next week. There are many reasons that players can look worse or better than they really are in practices.

It's entirely possible he has problems this season, for whatever reason. it's hard to stretch good work as a DB over 3 seasons, much less 4. But he's a professional and comes to play so I don't think it will happen. And if it does, at least is seems like the rest of the secondary is stepping up.

It's so hard to know from practices. He could be working on tweaking his technique, he could be tired and just not going 100%, he might have been a little out of shape in the off-season, etc..

Hopefully, the pass rush is drastically improved this season and that makes it easier for all of the coverage guys.

I think Oscan will be OK once the passrush is for real. The current practice field setup doesn't permit contact or tackling of the QB, which always favors the QB and receiver. Once the action isn't restricted, he should be fine.

These practices are almost designed for the offense to dominate. Be worried if he is getting torched during the preseason games.

The difference is that the past two years, reports were that Scandrick was tearing it up in training camp...he was one of the standouts. This year it is the complete opposite. I worry that with the new money and positive press (being identified as the best CB on the team the past two years), has caused him to get the fat cat syndrome i.e. relax on his approach.

When it comes to 1 on 1s in practice. The DBs don't win very much. There is no pass rush.

but it was the same practice situation the previous two years when the talk was how great he looked/performed in that setting. If he struggled the last two years and still performed the way he did when the pass rush was real, I would say yeah, we just need to chalk it up to a practice that favors the offense.
