Should we bring in competition this week for our Inconsistent Kicker?

I say, definitely YES!

Throughout Mayer’s kicking career he has been inconsistent, especially on short kicks and extra points. The last few weeks this inconsistency is showing up. Almost none of his kicks are down the middle. Last week vs the Giants every Field goal, or extra point, barely made it or was no good.

I say bring in 3-5 kickers to give Mayer some serious competition. This will make him focus and put game like, pressure on him. If he kicks, as good as the competition, he remains our kicker for Seattle. This would give me confidence going into the Seattle game.

Kickers get in a groove and also get in slumps. Right now Mayer is in a slump. Like we have seen, almost none of his kicks are down the middle. We may bring in a veteran kicker, who is in a good groove, and hits everything right down the middle from 40 yards and in. Also, recently, especially last week everyone of Mayer’s kickoffs were short.

I’m afraid if we don’t bring in some competition, Mayer is going to continue to struggle. I could see him missing 25-40% of his kicks vs Seattle. I hope I am wrong, but the evidence is there for it to happen.

Jerry, be proactive, bring in 3-5 kickers. The kicker who is the most consistent wins the job. If it is close Mayer keeps his job for Seattle.

Competition is a good thing!! Especially for Kickers, who get in a groove and go into slumps. We do not need a Kicker in a slump going into Seattle!!!

25 to 40 percent? How many kicks to you expect him to have? If he has 2 and misses one, he made 50 percent, but if that one he misses was the potential game winner, nobody will care about the percentages.

I’m including extra points in that %. After watching every extra point, barely make it or miss, vs the Giants, I don’t trust Mayer. A good kicker should make 85% of their FG’s and 95% of their extra points.

1 missed extra point could cost us vs Seattle and Mayer has been extremely shaky on extra points and short FG’s lately.

In a word, yes.

No. Shouldn't even be a consideration at this point. Yes I get it, he has missed some, especially those that should be easy. But the odds are you are not going to change kickers at this point in the season so why take the chance of further damaging his confidence by showing him that you have no confidence in him. Only way to consider it is if some vet is cut today that has a proven track record, wouldn't risk it with a FA that has been sitting home all season.

I know, I was wordy and just talking about a kicker, but I’m seriously worried about our kicking situation and think we should be proactive in trying to fix it, or improve it, before it cost us vs Seattle.
I get that part. I'm wondering who you want to bring in.

Mayer’s good. I was told months ago there was nothing to worry about with him. He's clutch. :D

If another kicker is brought in just sign him and cut Maher cause there isn’t any going back after that. Maher would have 0 confidence.

All for drafting a Kicker in the draft btw.

He doesn’t seem to have any confidence right now. Bring in 3-5 guys and find someone in a groove. Mayer is a bottom tear kicker. There is little difference between him and many guys on the fridge of being on a team. Find a kicker in a MUCH BETTER groove than Maher!!

There are probably at least half a dozen, X kickers who have played in the league recently we could bring in. I would at least bring in some competition. We might find an X kicker, kicking really consistently. We cannot say that about Maher. Almost all his kicks are barely making it.
If Maher cannot handle some competition in practice, he cannot handle kicking in the playoffs.

We need to be proactive in this situation. We can’t just sit back when there might be a better X kicker just waiting for an opportunity.
