Should we extend Hatcher now?

I don't think I agree with this. Lot's of guys in the early 30 range sign with teams and contribute. I mean, nobody is saying it has to be a huge deal. Just talk about numbers.
Hatcher has been a decent player. But I've never watched a game where I thought we had to have him until he retires. He contributes, but he's never controlled or dominated his position. He's never sniffed a Pro Bowl. He's hasn't started most of his career. You hear his name once in a while, but you go entire halves without hearing his name. To me. he is a JAG, little more.

If Hatcher is willing to sign for maybe $2M a year, that would be OK. But my guess is that he wants a lot more than that. DT will be a priority next draft. I'm sure most D-lineman in the first couple of rounds next year can be just as productive as Hatcher, and be younger and cheaper too.

Right now I would keep the focus on football and deal with contracts later on. There is a lot to prove my everyone Hatcher included and while I like him and hope he could remain a Cowboy it is time for guys to show it when it counts.

I agree. But the original poster asked the question and I just figured I'd chime in.

Every player is not a Pro Bowl type of player. Hatcher is a solid guy. At worst, he's a solid rotational guy, which is what we will likely be doing along the DL the next few years.

The 85 Bears Defense, one of the best in the history of the game, had a guy named Steve McMichaels who played DT for them. He had two All Pro and two Pro Bowl years right at about year 6 or 7 in the league. He played 15 years in the NFL. Hatcher has 7 years in the league now. I see no down side to a discussion on an extension for Hatcher. He's still young enough to play out a 3 year deal. He just turned 31 in July.

Jason hatcher was one of the best 3-4 DE's in the league last year, to say he is nothing more than a JAG shows how much you know.

He was also like #60 on the NFL top 100.

All hatcher has done is get older and get injured. I am through with "serviceable" players when we should ALWAYS be looking at younger, cheaper and less-entitled players. Let us, for once and for all, approach the team as if a work in progress, not a static team with players were are comfortable with though they would be hard put to make it on 1st or second teams in other NFL cities.

If your going to extend a guy who is 30 or over, he better be a star player. Romo, Witten or Ware for example. He has to be part of the core of your team. Irreplaceable.

Hatcher is not the type of player. Lee and Bryant must be extended soon. That's where the teams priority should lie when it comes to contract extensions. That's my opinion anyway.

Well said.

3-4 DE's arent supposed to be sack masters, thats why JJ Watt is so great.

Absolutely. At most, he probably commands 3.5mil-a-year.

If we get Hatcher on a cap friendly deal .... I would extend him...NOW. If not, you let him walk. To me he reminds me a lot of Spencer. Hatcher is more versatile (on the DL anyway) than Spencer. I would hate to see a we have to sign Hatcher at all costs thread next spring. I would also hate to see him lighting up the world and us franchising him. LOL

I think you extend Hatcher and pay him to be a rotational player. No more, no less. He has value in that regard.

I would I like Hatch I also think he has a great attitude and a strong work ethic which is always a plus in my opinion. Yes he is 30 but a cap friendly deal for a guy with a high motor is the right move IMO. You mean to tell me he can't play another 3 yrs at a high level? I get people want to get young but there isn't anything wrong with having solid Vets who don't break the bank. 3 yr 10-12 mil with a 2 mil signing bonus would be good for a player like Hatch in this stage of his career
