Should We Try to Get Witten the TE Receptions Record?

He's 8 catches away from tying Tony Gonzalez's mark of 102 receptions by a tight end.

In 2004, when Gonzalez set the record of 102 catches, he had 14 catches in the last game. That game was meaningless for the Chiefs, who were out of playoff contention, and Gonzalez only had 3 catches in the first half. They threw him 17 passes in the 2nd half, and he caught 11.

Gonzalez has 92 catches this year, and the Chiefs play the Jets in a late game tomorrow, once again with nothing to play for. So the race is on, and it's conceivable that Witten could break the record, then come out of the game, and Gonzalez could get the record right back a few minutes later.

Wade has said he realizes there are individual goals that factor into playing time in this last game. How long, then, do we leave Witten in?

I say sit him when the rest of the starters sit, because there's a bigger prize to go after. The Chiefs will do whatever it takes for Gonzalez to keep his record. In essence, that's their Super Bowl. We know who the better TE was this year.

OTOH, if we want to try to get Witten 15 catches in the 1st half, that would be cool. ;)

regardless of what anyone wants, I think Romo is going to push this -- he'll look for the short pass to Witten over and over again - Romo loves Witten and he likely wants go get this for him.

Yup, I could see lot of short ones to Witten and like you said, Romo loves Witten and would like nothing more than seeing his good buddy holding an NFL record.

Of course Dallas will try to get the record in the 1st half, why not?
I'm pretty sure Gonzalez will be playing the whole game, and playing hard.

Let's say Witten has 5-6 receptions by halftime, I think Wade would play Witten into the 3rd quarter for another 3-4 receptions.

On the other hand, if Witten only has a couple of receptions by halftime, Wade may decide to let Witten sit out the 2nd half.

I think it sort of depends how Witten and Romo are doing by halftime.

It ain't going to happen. With TO out, Witten will draw double teams for the Skins. None of our other receivers are a real threat to beat one on one coverage against their secondary.

My point was, even if it does happen, and Witten comes out of the game and gets his pats on the back, Gonzalez could break Witten's new record in the 4th quarter of his game.

Very good point, if Glenn isn't effective deep, they will shut down Witten.

Oh well... Witten still will have one of the greatest seasons for a TE in NFL history regardless.

I'd try to get it for him... There's no doubt that players appreciate things like that.

And we should be able to... I just hope that with T.O. out, they don't totally collapse on him and take him away.

the Commanders play a cover-2, although it's not the Tampa cover 2, we may not even have to force feed Witten the record, he may find himself open alot anyways
