We're shoulder pads bigger back in the day, like in the 80s, early 90s? Looking at some older footage it looks like the pads were much bigger.

Back in the day some WRs used quarterback shoulder pads to lessen the restriction of their arms. Going for a pass over your head, you'd have to actually squeeze your arms together or the ball will fly right between them.
