Players take the field on offense, defense, and special teams. That's why some say it's a third of the game.

It's not about how much time or how many plays, a single unit gets on the field. Specials teams is still one of the three phases of the game. Offense, defense, and specials teams.
Sure, there are three phases, but that doesn't make them all equally important. There are three ways to score: TDs, kicks, and safeties. Hey, they must be equally important, why don't they practice all three?

A team usually runs about 63 plays on offense, 63 plays on defense and 26 plays on special teams. And a lot of those special teams plays are low value: most kickoffs and many punts are touchbacks, the difference between teams on extra points is a couple points a season.. And it's not a "single unit." It's several different units, drawn mostly from players whose main jobs are on offense or defense. That right there tells you that the teams don't consider special teams as important as offense or defense.

Can’t remember the year but either 2020 or 2021, a majority of NFL games were decided by 3 points or less. The K and STs can be those 3 points. And the difference between being 11-7 and 7-11.
Sure, the special teams could be those three points. But the offense and defense are much more likely to be the reason for that 3 point difference.

They’re only low value if nothing happens. When Dorance Armstrong blocked that punt in LA Sunday, a boring punt play turned into 3 points for us. When your offense is struggling as ours is these days, any kind of points can be huge. I would argue every single play is important because a mistake can make a routine ST play a pivotal play.

I really didn't read your post, cause all I have to say is ...who cares?

There was a Scottish gent....I was just letting him know why some call it 1/3.

Strange to hear debate on the ST's impact on team success as I totally agree with it being an equal 1/3 of the 3 phases to a successful team.

I mean a simple what if as in your punter or kicker sucks and the far reaching implications that could cause.

Special teams won last Thursday night's contest.

Anger has been bad

It is very weird for him to have shanked punts like he has, I think there is something wrong that they haven't disclosed. He was the best punter in the league last year and among the best over several years. You just don't start shanking punts unless there is a reason.

Special teams did give up the fake punt for a conversion this past week and as mentioned there has been a blocked XP and the bad snap this past week when the holder wasn't even looking. You can chalk that up to the new snapper, but it still falls under Fassel's control.

I do look at the special teams overall as a strength and something we are likely to get the better of week in and week out. I do want to see Turpin take a chance here and there for a return, he has been mad at himself on several of his fair catches.

Couple of complaints
Anger has shanked a couple recently.
I hope this is not a trend.
We have botched a couple of xp attempts.
One of those was a block the other we have a new long snapper.
Hope we can get all the above cleaned up.
The bad snap was his first snap ever with the team in a game, and he obviously snapped it way too soon. But his aim was dead on perfect after that.

Bones has done wonders for Joseph also

He really is turning into our best gunner....he was all over the field on special teams last week and it isn't the first time. While I'd love to see him playing corner more, he is at least contributing. Thing is, right now Diggs and Brown are locking it down on the outside, there really isn't a chance for him there. And he really isn't a slot corner so he will just have to bide his time and keep making plays on ST.

..we need Anger, to start kicking the living daylight out of the ball.

Been couple punts that barely crossed 30 yds.

I'm sure Anger will get back on track. He's only had a few bad punts

I know but dude sometimes you gotta take your shot. I can put a slow, sure handed guy back there if all we are going to do is catch them.

Are people starting to rescind their Turpin love already? I told y'all he was going to need some time to step up to the NFL level. It's not some easy thing. He's flipped the field a time or two and not fumbled. I'll take that and wait for later in the season.
