OXNARD, Calif. — Joe Theismann and Jeff Hostetler were both Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks in their NFL careers. Theismann scaled even greater heights as a league MVP.

But Theismann returned punts before he ever threw a pass in the NFL and Hostetler blocked a punt before he threw his first NFL pass.

When you are a young quarterback, buried on the depth chart, you do whatever you can to get on the field and prove both your value as a player and worth to your team.

And that’s exactly what Jameill Showers is doing this summer in his bid to make the Cowboys. He went to training camp as the fourth quarterback on the depth chart but did something in last Saturday night’s preseason game against San Francisco you rarely see from a quarterback.

Showers made a tackle. On special teams. In punt coverage.

“I’m a quarterback first but anything the team asks me to do, I’m more than willing to do,” Showers said. “Especially a player in my position. I wasn’t drafted in the first round. I have to earn my position on the team.”

I don't know if he has a future or not in the NFL but I like the attitude of doing whatever is asked of him, no questions.

I'm cheering at the top of my lungs for this guy to be bumped above Vaughn and get a real chance to showcase his talents against #2s.

Showers should be given a chance, the game on Sunday showed he could lead the team down the field and score. The film also showed how bad Vaughn played. Showers can play special teams, and play 3rd down and one QB. Showers can do more than hold a clipboard and think he could develop into a least a solid 2nd team QB if given a chance, now that make take a couple of years, but he is already a #3 QB !

I was skeptical that showers had any shot and I suspect the staff was too
But not only has he done the special teams stuff to boost his chances, to me he has played at close to the same level as Vaughn
He is in his first camp and you gotta wonder if he doesn't have a better chance to develope as a QB than Vaughn
Not saying he has what it takes to be a starter in this league anytime soon or ever will have. But if you are going to keep 3 qb's and one can contribute on st's and in his first camp is close to your guy you've been developing I think he is worth at least seeing if he can be developed
I don't see many scenarios where our 3rd QB is going to be called on to win an important game. It could happen but you could win the lottery but the odds are against it
I think Vaughn is better than last year but honestly no where near as advanced above showers as you would expect at this point

He has zero chance as a QB, but if he can cover kicks, he's far more valuable than Dustin Vaughan, who has a 1 percent chance as a QB.

We should be looking at other teams QB's as well to put on our roster.

We need another QB. Our current situation is awful. A decent vet will do.

I have a question that I honestly just haven't taken the time to look up. If you have a third QB who is designated as the "emergency" QB, is that guy allowed to enter the game on special teams? If not then he would have to be on the active roster every game to play special teams. Correct?

0%? You're telling me he has no chance whatsoever?

Parcells would say that sometime, somewhere, somebody thought this guy could play a little.

He wasn't even good in college against virtually nobody.

The emergency quarterback rule was eliminated four years ago.
