The critical beginning of Tony Romo's pro career happened when Bill Parcells gave him an entire preseason game to himself.
Tonight, Jameil Showers gets his "Romo" night. At least, I think that's what they plan to do, and I hope it is.
Granted, it won't be with starters like Romo had, but Showers will have the luxury of managing an entire game with the simple idea of winning that game. He can throw the ball the way if needed to settle for a punt. He can run two-minute drills, and think about field position for field goals, etc.
In other words, he can play without feeling like he has limited time or opportunity to "flash" for the coaches. He doesn't have to take unwise chances just to get on tape for his limited time on the field.
The Cowboys insist they like Showers. I think they really want to like him enough to give him the backup job to Prescott in Week 1. He knows the system better, he has a relationship with Linehan and Romo he can lean on. He has improved by the words you hear coming out of camp.
But he's also entirely unproven, and what he'd do in a real game is anyone's guess. Same for Dak, but he's played in big SEC games and won the coaches over in camp. Showers is still all potential and now resume.
I rooting for the kid tonight.
