The critical beginning of Tony Romo's pro career happened when Bill Parcells gave him an entire preseason game to himself.

Tonight, Jameil Showers gets his "Romo" night. At least, I think that's what they plan to do, and I hope it is.

Granted, it won't be with starters like Romo had, but Showers will have the luxury of managing an entire game with the simple idea of winning that game. He can throw the ball the way if needed to settle for a punt. He can run two-minute drills, and think about field position for field goals, etc.

In other words, he can play without feeling like he has limited time or opportunity to "flash" for the coaches. He doesn't have to take unwise chances just to get on tape for his limited time on the field.

The Cowboys insist they like Showers. I think they really want to like him enough to give him the backup job to Prescott in Week 1. He knows the system better, he has a relationship with Linehan and Romo he can lean on. He has improved by the words you hear coming out of camp.

But he's also entirely unproven, and what he'd do in a real game is anyone's guess. Same for Dak, but he's played in big SEC games and won the coaches over in camp. Showers is still all potential and now resume.

I rooting for the kid tonight.

I like Showers.. he's kind of had some bad bounces and terrible offensive line play. Hard to judge what he can do you know.

Hard to play pro football when you can't hit the broad side of a barn! Showers last night in the spotlight folks.

Difference is, Romo played with the 1's that night for a while. Showers has yet to have that chance and wont get it tonight either. It would be cool to see what he could do with the ones just for a little bit. Or maybe not.........

Won't be pretty with the band of Brodericks he'll be playing with. But there should be moments for him to show his wares.

Parcells would later say he gave Romo that night because he was getting him ready to play, because even before the season began he knew that he was going to go to Romo if things were shaky with Bledsoe early.

Showers is getting the night because he's breathing.

Definitely hoping he can prove worthy...the options outside of the organization are not pretty.

If quarterbacks are incapable of competently leading a team, should they even be called QBs? I had a lot of names for Weeden and Cassel last year and "quarterback" was not one of them.

so what is the verdict ??
I dont think he showed enough to be the # 2

Weeden had the one pick, but looks better than savage.

Jackson looked good .

I've gone on record on this forums way before this game saying showers isn't cutting it. I just assume take him into the season as a backup. Doesn't matter. If it's past dak, then I would rather just have the high pick. But Dallas needed to start using some 4th rounders on some outliner backups who can sit around and learn and have enough talent to be a backup.

Jerry will always believe in striking oil because he found Romo. It's almost like confirmation bias. Where you think you can and some how luck into a situation you never should have, and think you can do it again. If dak turns out great, then I will be celebrating with every Cowboys fan in the world, but come on draft a dang backup dude again. Get like two young quality guys learning on this team. I'm tired of dealing with it.

And yes I know they did this with dak and it finally worked out and they need to keep doing it.

Worth keeping around for the PS but he's not ready for prime time. I thought he was pressing and choked tonight. Maybe the pressure of making the team got to him.

Haha BEFORE the game, I wanted to post in this thread that Showers isn't very good and I wasn't expecting much. I chose not to because I didn't want to be negative about a guy I was rooting for.

Yeah... Showers isn't very good.

I'm not sure if Showers solidified his roster spot last nite?

I imagine we'll be watching the waiver wires closely this weekend .

Might make a good thread title.
